“SHUT DOWN? SHUT UP!”

TRACK Trails --Blue Ridge Parkway
Reviewed October 13, 2013

This is an advertisement one community in the Smokies ran on local TV to alert visitors that businesses are open along the parkway. Although the shutdown has closed all visitors centers, major trails, and attractions such as Linville falls and Mt Pisgah inn, all hotels, restaurants, inns, State parks, and privately owned attractions are open and awaiting visitors. Be advised that even restrooms along the parkway are closed.....yeah...good thing there are lots of trees. In the Asheville/Little Switzerland area, Grandfather Mt and Mt Mitchell parks are a must see. And remember, the views are still open! Trees in higher elevations are turning, but in valleys there is still lots of time to see fall colors.

The Blue Ridge Parkway's -- Kids in Parks Program or TRACK Trails --is a hands down winner. The purpose is to get kids out of the house, away from their tech toys, and onto a trail or a disc golf course. Our experience has been only with the trails around the Asheville NC area, but a visit to the BRP website will show other locations. Each one is unique , and what makes them so much fun is the interactive brochures provided at each trailhead . Our grandchildren- ages 7 and 9- love the Scavenger Hunts ,but there are other activities for older kids as well. They (and we) also enjoy the disc golf courses (located at area high schools) that include information (historical and nature-related) about the area. Best of all are the prizes that promptly arrive after a child has completed a trail hike or a round of golf and registers it online. (All information is in the brochures). Some trails (Chimney Rock Park) charge a fee and include more amenities. The rest are free. Whether a local resident or a tourist looking for a fun and healthful family activity--get out and get moving!
