“Classic Pub”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

A classic pub experience - feels like a trip back in time. A perfect place to meet friends and nurse a beer over friendly conversation. Great bartenders, the best beers around, great entertainment. You can actually bring your children without worrying about the people and atmosphere. The only weakness is that the food is unexceptional -menu items like Shepherd's Pie is expensive for what you get. I've found it's best to order "nosh"-type food like chicken wings, etc. If you want to get away from bright lights, television sets and impersonal atmosphere/service come to Jack of the Wood where you can relax in a warm and welcoming space.

“Love the vibe,”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

For me, Jack of the Wood captures what I love most about Asheville - music, food and the spirit of independence and counterculture. A great bar, great Pub Grub, good wait staff and some excellent local music all wrapped up in a smoke free, comfortable pub atmosphere. Come as you are and enjoy.

“Great Beer Bar and OK food”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

Jack of the Wood definitely wins on atmosphere and beer menu. This Celtic-style pub is adorned in dark-stained wood from floor to ceiling fans. There is live music pretty much all the time, and a great place for a quick brew or late night debauchery.

The menu is pretty good for bar food, and will help you soak up your heady libations. Definitely a place to checkout if love beer down-to-earth atmosphere.

“Jack of the Wood”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

I've visited off and on for two years. The beer is good, the decor is fun, and Jack of the Wood is considered a must-see among tourists. The food is Irish Pub food. Corned beef, fish n chips, Burgers, and Shepherd's pie. It nicely embodies the atmosphere of Asheville, from casual swank to local music talent.
If the tables are full, expect extremely slow service. Wait staff is friendly, but does not return often enough to ask for refills, condiments, to see if your food was correct, or to give your check. Whether this is from lack of employees or something else, I do not know. If not many people are eating, service is average.
If you want anything, tell your waiter with your first order- even asking for the check with your dinner unless you are willing to wait around for an hour after you finish eating. On Trivia night it is often elbow-to-elbow with extremely slow service.
When the music starts in the evening, employees walk around the tables asking for cover charge. If you stay, you must pay.
Music talent ranges from a couple of folk musicians to a fully amplified band. Check the website and search on youtube to see if you'll like the sound. For more lively nights they remove tables to create a dance floor. Accoustic music night is great. 3-4 local songwriters share the stage and take turns presenting their own music.
If you're just looking for a place to sit and drink a tasty craft beer, you've made a good choice. They also offer a couple of pretty tasty wines.

“Great live music and bar.”
Reviewed February 15, 2013 via mobile

Hung out with several friends and enjoyed the music. Very friendly, chill vibe. Kind of a "hole-in-the-wall" without being a locals only joint. We'll go back the next time we are in town.
