“Great dining, theatre and beer ! Couldn't be better”
Reviewed December 6, 2012

Very friendly staff welcomed us and as we were early decided to walk around first. No problem the welcome was as warm on the return and the staff patiently talked us through all the delicious menus items and sample all the beer varieties we liked.

The food was great. No question. As a Londoner being spoilt for great food you could sense the pride, skill and effort put into the menu. The seafood cowder is a must.

They had 15 beers all local ales fresh and on tap.

We visited the theatre which was such fun a great Christmas production well written and expertly performed.

The theatre is just 60 or so seats it seems so we had a great intimate experience. Shame more people do not get out to theatre in Asheville. Perhaps American idol was on that night !

All in all a wonderful evening... couldn't have been better. Thank you one and all at the MF. (we visited on 5 December)

“Dinner and a GREAT show!”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

We had one of the best nights out since moving to Asheville, NC.

The food was extrodinary and the show is the best this side of New York.

A great value and a must for locals and travelers alike.

“A great idea in the River Arts District”
Reviewed October 12, 2012

We've attended several theater productions at The Magnetic Field over the last year, but this week was our first time to sample their food. We decided to have dinner at the Field before attending a production in the adjacent theater. We got there just after five and were almost the only people in the room. We were seated immediately, of course. Our drinks appeared quickly. Our food wasn't far behind. The quality of both were excellent, and we felt like our server was particularly friendly and efficient.

Since this is primarily a bar, the restaurant menu is somewhat limited, but with the regular items and the nightly specials there was plenty to choose from. You can order small plates or full-sized entrees. The menu includes both meats and vegetarian options.

The theater focuses on original material, usually by local authors, performed by local, non-equity actors. You won't see a revival of a Broadway production here, and as a result the quality might be a little uneven, especially if you attend when they are producing their "Brief Encounters" show, which features several one-act plays, each by a different author. But, on this trip we were there for a performance of MILF -- The Musical. This two-act play was well-written, directed, and performed, and it proved so popular that the theater extended the run by two weeks and it's played to sold out audiences almost every night. The theater is small (it holds about 60 people), so there are no bad seats. You're welcome to bring your drink in to the performance. A glass of wine can help even the weak shows seem better.

“Great cocktails, interesting food - TripAdvisor has location wrong”
Reviewed August 24, 2012

Too bad TripAdvisor has the Magnetic Field listed as being in "Depot St., NC" instead of in Asheville, at 372 Depot Street in the River Arts District, where it actually is located.

Magnetic Field is one of the newer River Arts District spots, and still a generally undiscovered gem. The restaurant and bar adjoin a little 64-seat theater, which presents alternative drama, comedy nights and poetry slams.

We had what were described as the two most popular dishes on the menu -- Flat Iron Steak and Shrimp and Grits -- and they were up to the highest standards of Ashevlle. My Flat Iron Steak, with gnochi, chanterelle mushrooms, greens and heirloom tomatoes in a cabernet sauce ($18), was absolutely delicious. My wife's Shrimp and Grits with a gumbo sauce ($14) was perhaps a little light on the shrimp (just four) but the sauce was outstanding -- she said it was among the best she has had.

The new cocktail menu is creative, with unusual offerings such as three kinds of Old Fashioneds and the Ernest Hemingway Daiquiri (with grapefruit juice). Cocktail prices are reasonable -- generally $7 and $8. Local craft beers on draft are $4.

Our dinner with a total of four drinks and a shared ice cream dessert came to around $85 with tip and tax, in the range of other Asheville restaurants of this quality.

We'll definitely go back!
