Renaissance Asheville Hotel
Ranked #27 of 66 Hotels in Asheville
Reviewed November 22, 2008

I visited my daughter (age 22) who lives in Asheville. I chose the Renaissance because it is a classy hotel, right in downtown, with lots of amenities. My daughter stayed in the room with me - it was a mother-daughter sleepover!. Our room was quite nice, fresh and well decorated. The bathroom was a tad small, but we didn't really care about that. We enjoyed the HDTV, the pool (a lovely, large pool with lots of natural light, the water was perfect), and had a delicious room service dinner (okay, it was only hamburgers, but they were each cooked perfectly, one was rare, and one was medium well - but that is not easily done with room service and they did it perfectly), and an enjoyable dinner in the restaurant, with attentive and friendly service. Many of the other hotels in Asheville are a bit dingy and not so well located. This hotel feels more world-class than the others. The only other hotel I would choose in Asheville is the Haywood Park, but my daughter and I plan to stay at the Renaissance on my next visit because we enjoyed it so much this time.

The hotel is in an excellent area within easy walking distance to all of downtown, and very short driving distance to both the Grove Park Inn (read my review!!) and Biltmore. The rooms are newly renovated and look very nice and clean. The beds are pretty comfortable, and the bathrooms are tiny! HDTV is very nice!!
The negatives: VERY loud in and AM- mostly housekeeping. The hotel offers no continental breakfast- in fact, they will charge you $13 for cereal and toast! WOW. For a very nice hotel, I would expect some snack or on-the-go breakfast items, but they did not offer that. They would, however, deliver a fruit plate to your room for $10 + tax and tip. haha
We will not stay here again, because in Asheville, you can pay a similar price and stay at a B&B with full breakfast included or even a less pricey hotel with similar amenities.

We normally stay at the Grove Park Inn (3/2 plan) when we pass through Asheville. However, on this trip we only had two days to spend there, so we opted to stay at the Renaissance. It is closer to downtown Asheville and is signifantly cheaper than the Grove Park by at least $100/night. But comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges. The Renaissance has one restaurant, no extensive grounds to maintain, unsheltered and somewhat unsecured parking at night, and certainly no scenic mountain views. We requested an upper floor with a view, and what we received was a view of a few city buildings and the rear parking lot . The room itself was very nice and had been recently redecorated. The beds were comfortable and the room had a small refrigerator and a large HDTV. The local cable system that the hotel contracts with provided HD quality programming which was a pleasant surprise. The room was not as quiet as the Grove Park and you could hear doors opening and closing throughout the night down the hallway.
The big advantage of this hotel is its location to downtown Asheville. You can walk to almost all downtown stores, shops and restaurants. Its also only a short 6 minute drive (2.7mi.) from the hotel to either Biltmore Village or Biltmore Estate.
It's not the Grove Park, but for a Priceline price, it's a good value.

Just wanted to write a review commenting on the renovation and updating of this hotel. We have stayed here at least once a year for the past few years. We were pleasantly surprised to see new carpet, furniture, TVs and more on our recent stay. The hospitality was also great. We wanted to change rooms when we arrived and the staff were really willing to help us find the right room, including showing us the floor plan of the hotel. After a long hike I was really sore, and enjoyed relaxing in the whirlpool tub by the pool. We were so happy that we decided to stay here because you can walk to all the great shops, restaurants and bars in downtown A-ville. A highly recommended place for one of the best weekend getaway towns we know.

We booked this hotel for a long weekend. It is ideally located to explore downtown. The hotel is average. The pros - location, free parking, customer service. The cons - loud corridors, dirty bathroom (hair on walls, above door, in sink and in bathtub at check-in), stinky towels, no soundproofing (heard alarm in room next to us), overpriced for the quality, the renovations over the years show (traditional tile in shower doesn't match the asian styled sink/console; weird modern carpet with asian sleek furniture). If you can find a deal on the rate, it would present a better value. The hotel is nothing special in a town with lots of great hotels. Next time, I will book earlier to take advantage of Asheville's wonderful accommodation. Booking at the last minute did not serve us well and we ended up settling for the Renaissance.

We (two adults and two kids ages 16 and 11) stayed here October 11 through October 13. I was honestly a little nervous given some of the reviews, but we had a great stay! We booked through hotels.com and got a very good rate - much cheaper than Marriott's online rate - but now that I know about Marriott's price-matching policy, next time I'll check that out and save myself the hotels.com booking fee. The room was spacious, the HD TV was much appreciated by my crew (we don't have one at home, so there was the novelty factor), and the pool was large, clean, and uncrowded - a big plus for kids. We did not hear any noise from adjoining rooms and the air conditioning worked perfectly. The hotel is within walking distance of all the downtown Ashville places of interest, and the staff was very helpful and steered us to some kid-friendly eating establishments. I am surprised this hotel isn't ranked higher here on tripadvisor.com.

We just got back home from a wonderful weekend getaway to Asheville. We arrived at the hotel around noon not expecting to get to check in but they had a room ready so they let us check in early. Were told to bring our stuff up to our room and come back to the desk to get a map of Downtown. The manager was extremely knowledgeable and immediately started marking places on the map that she thought we should check out while there. The suggestions were perfect and we had a wonderful trip because of her help.

As for the room, we were upgraded to a suite which was beautiful! It's always nice to be able to unwind after a day of sightseeing on a couch and not your bed. The decor was updated and trendy. Everything in the room looked brand new and felt clean. The bed was very comfortable and the turn down service with chocolates was a nice touch.

2 nights were not enough, wish we could have stayed longer. We will definitely be returning to this hotel the next time we go to Asheville.
