“The only inexpensive hotel right in downtown”
Reviewed September 27, 2010

The choices right in the heart of downtown Asheville are very limited so if your main concern is being able to walk everywhere without ever having to get back in your car then expect to pay over $200 a night if you decide against this hotel. That's a huge difference from the $68/night we ended up paying. After reading the reviews on this site, both good and bad, we just couldn't justify the extra expense so decided to go for The Downtown Inn and in the end we're glad we did.
Let's start with the much discussed lack of curb appeal. Although many reviews on here mention how awful the place looks when you drive up, I wasn't really prepared for just how bad it truly is. It almost looks like it's being prepared for demolition or like it recently survived a nearby explosion of some sort. As bad as it looks in online pictures, it's far worse in person. Much of the outside is covered in unfinished plywood which is in the process of being painted to match the rest of the concrete exterior...nice touch! Clearly there's no money available to improve the outside or the lobby for that matter. The woman at the front desk was pleasant enough but I did get the distinct feeling that she was punishing me for not booking directly through them (I used Hotels.com). The punishment was two double beds instead of the king I booked (although she gave me a discount) and banishment to a room on the front side of the hotel facing the street. If you sleep lightly, you'll want to be on the pool side since some Asheville locals like to ride up and down the street all night long with stereos thumping and there's no shortage of Harleys either. Anyway, I held my breath upon opening the door to our room and was actually pleasantly surprised. Fairly new carpeting, newish wallpaper and basically fresh and clean all the way around. The bathroom ceiling could have used a coat of paint but that was really the only complaint. The room even had a nice sized TV, mini fridge, coffee maker and microwave. For a weekend getaway this hotel is fine.

We stayed here 6 nights while on vacation in Asheville in Sept 2010. It was nothing fancy but the rooms were clean, the bed was comfortable, the service was good, the location was great and it was super cheep so can't beat it. We could walk to all the best restaurants, bars, shops and galleries. Jack of The Wood is across the street and has great food, beer and music. Early Girl Eatery is across the street too and has great breakfast. We will stay here again when we come back the Asheville.

This place wasn't too bad. Yes, it was a bit dated from the outside but the rooms themselves were perfectly clean. They have really tried hard to make this place look nice. There are plants everywhere including a little rooftop garden on the backside. The staff is also great. The location is perfect. Basically we parked our car there our first night and didn't move it until we left a few days later. You can walk to countless restaurants, bars, coffee shops, bookstores, and much more. It is in the most perfect location. I recommend this place and will defintely stay again.

This Motel will not reserve a room for anyone within 60 miles of Asheville. The reason for this I connot give.I would urge anyone who is comeing to the Asheville area to visit family or friends to looks elsewhere. The owner was very unfriendly when I inquired about getting a room for Sept. 18, so We could attend the yearly Brewgrass Festival downtown.I guess folks from out of the area have greener money than we do!!!!!!I was very unhappy to be turned away by a local business.

The front desk girl was helpful with area information but for some reason she needed to photo copy all the drivers licenses of all the registered guests. I'm not too comfortable giving this informaiton but it was late when we checked in and we had been traveling all day so I caved in and handed over my license. We were given two rooms next to the pool which was nice because it had limited foot traffic but you got thepleasure of listening tot he pool all night, which closes at midnight. The rooms are less than clean and the cracks under the door are large enough for any cockroach to walk through with no problem at all. The bathrooms were akward, there was tile on the floor outside the bathroom which had a sink and refrigerator but no counters! No where to put your toiletries. The towels were dingy and the toilet was bolted into the wall crooked!
I dont know of any other hotels in this area (Obviously) but I'd say there has to be a better hotel.

For someone who wants to be in the middle of downtown Asheville, this is a good no-frills choice. Overall quality was better than other reviews here indicate. Exterior is somewhat shabby but interior is OK. Main demerit: the wireless Internet was overloaded and couldn't be received on laptops in the room, but the guest computer in the lobby worked OK. Room was clean and beds were comfortable. A-C noisy but adequate. Room mini-refrigerator was a nice extra. Continental breakfast featured more choices than usual, and coffee was good. We asked for a room in the rear, so street noise was not a problem. Best to park in the lot by early evening, and do your touring on foot. If you do an early morning departure, you may have to open the parking lot gate yourself to exit. Hotel's outdoor pool is extra large, with six water spouts creating a fountain effect. Located only a couple of short blocks from the main downtown activities. On Saturday night, Asheville is a bustling place, with lots of bar entertainment and street performers to amuse you. Especially good for the under-40 crowd.

Gotta be honest when we pulled up we were a bit nervous. The decor is outdated and the wallpaper def needs to be changed but within 15 minutes of us checking into our extremely clean room the front desk called to see if everything was up to par (when does that happen??). The workers were very friendly and attentive. The hotel is in the perfect location. We were able to walk everywhere, even the civic center! I would def recommend staying on pool side, it was very quiet and private. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a hotel in the perfect location for the perfect price.
