My husband and I first read about this restaurant in the New York Times' 36 Hours book and it does NOT disappoint. For someone who's knowledge of Indian food didn't extend past Tikki Masala, my eyes were opened to a world of delicious culinary tastes. I seriously don't have enough good things to say--this food is amazing. We live almost two hours from Asheville but seriously can't go more than a month without this amazing food.

Our favorites are:
Bhel Puri
Bombay Chili Cheese Fries
Chicken Pakoras
Masala Fries
Sloppy Jai (our all-time favorite)
Vada Pav
Kathi Kabob Roll

We've also had a few of the daily Thalis and they were amazing!
And DO NOT neglect their dessert menu--the mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches are TO DIE.

Awesome food, great ambience. We go there every time we pass by Asheville. It's great to see good Dhaba food in the US.

Chai Pani does the Indian version of small plates, billed as Indian street food. We stopped by for lunch and enjoyed the experience. The plates and flavors are all interesting and inventive. Sharing four plates we started with the Okra Fries which were insanely addictive. Not your cornmeal breaded country version, these morsels were thinly sliced strips quick fried and tossed in lime juice. We followed with Bhel Purvi, a nice mix of rice, potato, chickpeas, cilantro & onion. Finished off the meal with the Kathi Kabob Roll and Masala Potato Uttapam. Both good, but the Uttapam, a crepe style dish, was a little undercooked. Great for change of pace lunch.

The cashier was helpful with suggestions and explaining the menu. She suggested a daily special that isn't on the normal menu, however, it was vegetarian, authentic, and was served in slider form on two delicious buns. I couldn't have been happier with the suggestion. My partner was equally happy.

We also shared the Kale Pakoras which was served with green chutney & sweet yogurt. Heavenly sauces.

Cool lunch spot, tasty dishes and not the "usual" Indian food you see in American restaurants.

Only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was bored staff hanging out near the bar talking about how jaded they are about music. Cmon.

A friend took us here for dinner. Great food. We ordered several plates to share between the 4 of us. Must try the fried okra "fries" and the fried kale. Im not into Indian food but have to say this was really good and not too heavy in taste.
