Saw this activity in travel brochures and were aided and encoouraged by the staff at the Haywood Park hotel to give it a go. The weather was relatively cool with a light breeze in the later afternoon, so we jumped onto the "trail" and were educated and entertained while experiencing many of Asheville's founders, interesting architecture and essential cultural perspectives. The walking tour is entirely on paved streets and walkways, with points of interest marked with explanatory plaques, applicable structures and unique artistic pieces. The tour covers nearly two miles, some of which includes hilly streets and walkways, so good walking shoes are recommended. Completing the tour not only provides a broad perspective on the roots of Asheville history, but also offers a complete orientation to the downtown core, including many key streets and shopping/eating/lodging areas for future exploration.
