If you want a fun, easy, inexpensive introduction to Asheville NC, catch a ride on the Gray Line Trolley. Cost is about $25, with senior and family discounts. Board at the Visitors' Center on Montford Rd. The ride, which lasts about two hours, takes you through the hightlights of Asheville's history, architecture, and current interesting spots. Every tour guide we've had offered fascinating, little-known anecdotes about the city. This is a must-do for any visitor--and for residents too.

Hi StevoinMinnesoto,

When you say not as good as the white line, we are the Gray Line trolley and we operate both the Red and White trolleys. Your guide "Uncle Ted" is a proud native of Asheville. His accent and enthusiasm are all representative of this. He is also one of our most popular guides as you can probably see from the reviews. I regret that he didn't live up to your expectations. We do have about 20 guides and you are always welcome to call ahead to see who is working.

Sincerely,
Jonathan

We'd taken the White Line trolley tour once before in Asheville and had a great time with a knowledgeable and very funny guide. We took friends for the trolley and found the White has merged with the Gray Line (red) trolleys. We boarded the red trolley and our driver introduced himself "Uncle Ted". His accent was so thick, the microphone was placed so poorly and his attitude was so self-centered that none of us 4 enjoyed the tour. He would pull over and stop, turn around in his seat and stare us all down telling us various things about Asheville and would always end by saying "And you can look that up". So what? Nothing he described seemed interesting at all as it just came across as bragging. Sorry, we'll pass on this trolley next time, at least if this guy is the guide.

Hi SteveninMinnesoto,
I am sorry to hear your experience was not what you expected. Your guide, Ted, like many of our guides, is a proud local of the area born and raised in these beautiful mountains. His enthusiasm for his tour (and the area) is infections to many guests. I understand that "one does not fit all." However we do have over 10 tour guides. With the trolleys running every thirty minutes, you can hop-on and hop-off and get a new guide along the way. You are also always welcome to call ahead and find out who is guiding which days, many do, as everyone has their favorites.

A little slow starting in my opinion - seemed like it was just going to be 'look at this house / looks at that house' and advertisements for the B&B's but it picked up and gave a good introduction to the Asheville area. The tour guide / driver was very pleasant (and I must say quite a good driver being able to navigate some very tight areas without incident). The fact that the tour is a hop on / hop off whenever you like and it allows two days for the same price is both efficient and thrifty. What's nice is that the second day doesn't have to be 'tomorrow' -- it can also be the next day. Some interesting stops along the way give you the option to check out the shopping or some lovely views. Senior and AAA get a discount (or use the coupon in the brochure to save $2). Free parking in the visitors center.

Just wanted to give a shout out to Kathy our tour guide on Saturday! She was superb! Very knowledgable and we learned a lot about the history of Asheville because of her. Will definitely recommend her and the Gray Line to friends and family who visit Asheville.
