this is a "locals" favorite - a wonderful family run restaurant with a Himalayan theme - the lunch buffet is a good deal

We went to Kathmandu Cafe our first evening in Asheville - a busy Saturday night. What a treat! Our waitress was extremely nice and pleasant. The momos weren't quite as good as the ones we had at a Nepalese restaurant we went to in Seattle earlier this year, but they were still great. They have some different types of naan - we tried the one with coconut and cashews - yummy! I had the chicken korma and it was very good. I'd definitely eat here again when we return to Asheville.

From the TA reviews, we expected more and would only call this average. The spices just wern't there. Perhaps it's so 'Americanized' the translation was pretty bland. Weirdest raita we've ever had -- had to actually ask if it was raita -- no hint of cucumber -- strange flavor and consistency of salad dressing. In and of itself, not bad. Just not raita. Flavors lacked complexity and 'hot' lacked heat. Our waitress was wonderful but with a large party adjacent to us, she was slammed. Appologized three times for >30 min delay. Not a huge deal but while she hustled, literally was running, the guy who asked how everything was would have been more helpful giving our waitress a hand. With a crowd, the restaurant was on the noisy side, but brightly painted and decorated. Nan, despite a variety offered on menu, was dissapointing. Unless food improves, once was enough.

We stopped in for dinner one evening while visiting family and had a large party which seemed difficult for the staff. The service was okay and the atmosphere nothing special. The food though = good. I had the malai koft which was great. Would not recommend the bison dumplings though

We decided to take a chance going to Kathmandu as we enjoy Indian and Thai but had never seen a Nepalese restaurant before. Wow! Anyone who enjoys eastern food or wants to try it will enjoy this Cafe. The prayer flags on the ceiling do not suggest what you need to do to enjoy a meal here. We absolutely enjoyed out experience here, so much in fact we returned the next night and did it all again with a variation or two. Everything is scratch made - even the Papadums. The Naan, and all breads in fact, are wonderful and served hot. The masala dishes are beyond description. Kormas were unique and equally wonderful.
The dishes are flavorful with emphasis on flavor. Spiciness doesn't necessarily mean HOT. If you are wanting to explore the many pleasures of indian food but are afraid of getting something too hot, this is the place to go. The staff is informed and extremely helpful and patient. Go and enjoy.
