On the advise of a gentleman we met at nearby Jack of the Wood, we walked on over to The Thirsty Monk and headed downstairs to the Belgian Ale Bar. This establishment has a huge selection of draft and bottled Belgian style ales ranging from lower 4.3% ABV up to the double digit 11%-12% and higher. We tried to stay on the lighter end and particularly enjoyed some of the sour ales. I would need to locate my receipt to remember everything we tried! We were there on a Wednesday night and it wasn't too crowded. The bartender was very friendly and she was able to suggest a variety of ales, as well as pour samples. They offer half pours (8oz?), which I lliked so that I could try different ales. The bartender also suggested menu items to share. I ordered the Thai style pulled pork tacos and my husband order the poached pear salad on field greens. Both were delicious. There were a few groups of fellow Belgian ale lovers sitting around us so we had fun talking beer, travel, sports, everything with them. We did not wander upstairs to the cocktail bar but it sounded quite interesting. Will save that for next time.

We were here on St. Patrick's Day and talk about the right place at the right time! We went to the downstairs bar first and were impressed by the mostly Belgian selection of beers. We had a couple beers up there, paid our tab, and then went upstairs.
Being St. Patrick's Day the upstairs was in very festive spirits. We were there for beer, which we enjoyed immensely, but we did get a smoked fish dip to eat that was absolutely delicious. We sat at the bar and although they were slammed, we didn't feel ignored at all. The atmosphere was rockin'. We'll definitely go back.

the upstairs monk has a variety of interesting cocktails not regularly encountered; the bartenders really take pride in their craft; these are not weekend mixology students; that said, their billing system is screwed up and incomprehensible which might make one a bit wary; if it's not to busy, get straight with the servers before you start ordering; and beware the treats in lockers which while said to be complementary were not actually so, or so it seemed from the billing scheme

Friendly service and an awesome beer list. We didn't get to go downstairs, but we'll be back to try the Belgian beers. Food was decent.

I was very pleased with the beer selection on tap at the Thirsty Monk and prices were reasonable. However, the pizza was mediocre. Probably to be expected for a beer bar, but my suggestion is to stick to the beer (perhaps with some appetizers/snack food) and you will have a 5 star experience.
