This incredible estate is one of the most magnificent properties in the United States. We loved touring the main house, gardens and the winery. Expect to spend a full day there. The staff and docents are very friendly and knowledgable. We recommend purchasing your tickets in advance, befor arrival. It's pricey, but worth it.

If you are in to architecture, history, art, or just like to gawk at the trappings of great wealth, you really must visit the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, America's largest (175,000 sf) privately owned home, larger than Hearst Castle (69,000 sf) in California. Want to know how large Biltmore is? It has 43 bathrooms, though not a single one is open to the public (though they do have wonderfully clean accommodations for visitors). I have toured the mansion twice, once in summer and just recently to see the Christmas decorations.

What we liked:

1. Art, art, art, period clothing (1880s) fabulous furniture and other accoutrements of the gilded age.
2. Extremely helpful and informed guides.
3. Exceptionally well-stocked gift shop, and not too pricey.
4. Besides the main gift shop there's also a confectioner's, toy shop, and a few other dedicated retailers. I especially liked the vintage candy selection.
5. It's a full day trip: mansion, winery, farm, and gardens.
6. You can get a hot meal on site, though we did not take advantage.

What we didn't like:

1. This is a pricey trip, more than $100 per ticket. Plan to get the most for your money by arriving early.
2. The mansion is not air conditioned. Our first trip was in July and we would never do it again. The gardens were abloom but it was too hot to linger and enjoy them.
3. You cannot take any photos inside the mansion, so there's no photos to share with family back home.

The Biltmore is really something to see!!!! It is crazy that someone would want to build something sooooo big even if they do have lots of money....

Your first impression is how did the do this in 1895? The home is beyond belief not only for then, but forever. The candlelight tour is a little crowded and not guided, which I would have expected for the large expense, the audio tour was better, but there is so much information left out.
Antler village is worth the extra drive on the huge estate, stop and have wine ( pay a few dollars and skip the free tasting line) . There are restaurants on the estate, we didn't have time , but the Stable Cafe looked great.

Enjoyed our Christmas Candlelight Tour of the Biltmore House. Although it's pricey, we enjoy coming every few years. The Biltmore always impresses. I think we'll try the audio tour next time.
