The Biltmore Estate is amazing. A pleasant woodsy drive that leads up to an enormous mansion, complete with gardens, a pond, a small farm, and several shops makes for a full afternoon of sightseeing. There are several options for tickets, and a military discount is offered. My party did the self-led tour, which took about an hour to complete. We did not linger in any one area of the mansion as it was very crowded.
After viewing the mansion, we ambled about the grounds and gardens. The views are breathtaking, and the cool mountain air was a wonderful change from the heat. We skipped the winery and bought nothing at the over priced shops. The estate was expensive enough to enter, but there are about 1700 employees to provide for.
The Biltmore is truly an American treasure, showing what can be earned when one works hard enough and smart enough. Perhaps that is why it is so popular.

We were fortunate to go on a Wed. In July and the house tour and grounds were not super crowded. We actually ended up going back the next day to explore the grounds, eat at the Bistro and take the 5:00 carriage ride through the fields and woods. The views of the back side of the house and mountains were lovely. If you want to do some of the activities at the Outdoor Adventure Ctr, like the segways, book in advance to be sure. I would not take small children to the estate because it is so large, lots of steps etc. there are shuttles to the different areas, however. The winery is also fun with a tour and free tastings. You must go if you are in Asheville.

Over $50 a ticket just to get in! For that price, they don't even give you a tour:(. Every tour, even audio, is an additional cost. The food prices were crazy high, too. Interesting place in a pretty setting, but you expect much more for what you pay to see it. We were disappointed.

To think about the engineering and craftsmanship that went into designing & building the Biltmore is so impressive; the beginning of what we know today as Forestry was born right here - makes the Blue Ridge Mountains that more beautiful! Definitely get the audio - for $10 - well worth it! Beautiful, would love to see it again at Christmas!
