I honestly don't know how many times you can view this wonderful home and its grounds and not learn something new. What a wonderful way to spend the day and secretly dream of how it would have been to live in that era with that kind of fortune. But alas, back to reality! Seriously, the planning work and insight that went into the construction of this Estate is practically unthinkable in todays world, much less the 1890's.

I can't believe how some people spend money. I thought William Randolph Hearst spent a fortune on Hearst Castle. He's a piker compared to Vanderbilt. The "house" cover 4 acres of ground and is 4 stories tall with a basement. A magnificent, opulent castle.

What an awesome way to spend an afternoon.
I booked a private tour with a personal guide vs the audio
equipment--much better and I could ask a few questions
while others gathered. Seemed to be a maximum private
tour with about 12 tourists; smaller would have been ideal.
Guide was excellent, however I noticed some issues with
service in other areas. Borderline rude employee at
ticket area-- not
directing visitors until she was approached with questions;
busy discussing personal plans with another staff member.
In the mansion staff members could be distant and not
real friendly.
This is the most beautiful home in our country--could ya
smile and welcome visitors?
No greeting in the gift shop--this is retail sales 101 stuff.
The service does not fit the Biltmore overall, from telephone
contact and beyond.

We had a house like this, but the maintenance was too costly! Seriously, this is beyond belief. The size and scope is truly breathtaking. Plan to spend all day, but also rest because if you do, there is lot of walking - inside and out. One can do the house tour in about 1-1/2 hours but you may miss stuff. Only wish they let you see more inside without having to pay for an extra tour. On that note- you should buy your tickets online before you go; we bought just one day in advance and saved 11.00 (since gate admission is 60.00 per adult). No picture taking allowed inside but plenty outside. Also - they charge 10.00 for an audio tour which was not needed since often you cannot help but hear it from those who blast it. The gardens are truly amazing, and the selection of trees and plants..I am sure most have never seen. There are a number of eateries at the house and at the winery. A fun time for all. Relax and take in the whole life of the old tycoon era.
