You really must see this estate! But get there early. The line in the house moves in only one direction and it stagnates and stalls as the time progresses. Gift shop prices were reasonable too. We ate at the Bistro in Antler Hill Village which was very good.

We toured the Biltmore Estate yesterday, and what an amazing place it is. If you tour the house, you MUST rent the audio guide - it is well worth the $10 per person. It took is a little over two hours to tour the house, and the audio guide really gave us a great feel for what it may have been like when the Vanderbilts lived there.

We've been on many mansion tours - from San Simeon (the Hearst estate) to the Breakers (Cornelius Vanderbilt's summer home in Newport RI) to Versailles, and this was our favorite. The home, the guide, and the way the collection is curated really made this special. And if you are staying at the Inn at the Biltmore (which we are) it is free.

The Biltmore Estate was glorious. It wasn't "feminine" as some estates are, but was built by a bachelor, so instead of carpeted stairways, they were granite. There were animal trophies on some walls and a large pool and work-out area, all things that don't dominate female influence. That made it a nice alternative. The self-guided tour with headphones is well worth the cost. We will return and do the behind the scenes tour as well. I recommend the Biltmore.

Though a bit pricey at $59 per person, for much of the season you can get discount tickets online for $44 if you order more than 7 days in advance of your trip. The tour of the home is magnificent as was our visit to Antler Village (4 miles away) and the winery with wine tasting, all of which are included in the price of admission.

The website stated that Saturdays are the busiest days, but we found Fridays extremely busy as well. Biltmore personnel informed us that Tue-Thurs are the best days to attend to avoid the crowds. Definitely a must see if you have the time.
