My son and I stayed at the Haywood Park Hotel for 2 nights shortly before Christmas. The staff is exceptional -- Terri & Brandi at the front desk and John at bell service were all terrific -they were attentive and helpful. As others have mentioned, the hotel used to be a department store, so aspects of the hotel are quite charming.(For example, when you get off the second floor elevator, you are told you are at "Men's Wear".) We had a two-queen room which came with a large sitting area. The bathroom is large and had both a shower and a tub. The shower had two showerheads, which was very nice. My son said the bath was fine. The location is excellent; it's very easy to walk everywhere downtown (and Asheville has a terrific downtown with great eateries, a terrific bookstore, wonderful arts & crafts galleries, and cute boutiques). We visited both the Biltmore Estate and the Grove Park Inn, which are short and easy drives from downtown. The Haywood Park is a great option if you want to stay downtown.

Room Tip: most if not all of the rooms face the street, so if noise is a concern, ask the desk staff which roo...

This grand old building - the former Bon Marche and later Ivey's - has been renovated into a hotel, and it's well-situated right downtown Asheville. You can walk out the door and be right on the Urban Trail. Admittedly, you're not at the start or the end, so that can be a challenge, but you can certainly pick up and head in either direction.

One of the best things about the hotel is the location, but it certainly doesn't stop there. Using the fact that it was a department store as a base means when you get off the elevator you hear what used to be on that floor: "3rd floor, men's fashions" (or what have you). Assuming you choose the correct elevator, that is - and that is one of the challenges. There are two, and unlike most buildings, where you press one button and it summons whichever elevator is nearest, here there are two separate buttons for the elevators. Choose wisely - or press both and get the first to come to you. Though that could rile other guests.

As to the rooms? They are nice, but decor is definitely dated. Worn down even. Since just about all of the rooms face one street or another, and the insulation on the windows is just about gone, you can hear most noises. Even the heavy drapes need re-hanging, since they are missing some. This means you can probably not expect to sleep in to a quiet morning, and when you do get up the next day, if your room has a tub, it may not fill quickly. Ours took half an hour to fill half way.

The front desk is very friendly, and it has a player piano that plays much of the time as well. Also be sure and pick up your complimentary champagne (or water) on the way in. If you don't, they will be only to happy to charge you for a bottle of water if you use the one in your room. Isa's Bistro is off the lobby on one side, and there is a cafe off the lobby on the other for breakfast and lunch (and coffee). Nice options.

If you use the valet, call well in advance to get your car delivered - or be prepared to wait, even if you are the only person waiting. This seems to be because the valet takes a stop through the atrium and by the cafe to pick up coffee and/or talk to the staff on their way. We saw this happen more than once.

The Haywood Park Hotel is a step back in time. I wouldn't describe it as dated, it's just preserved. It is built in an old department store so you will experience some of the charm of an upscale department store while you stay. The hotel is situated right in the middle of the city so if you are planning to visit downtown, you can't get any closer. Walking is quick and easy from the front doors of the hotel. Parking is very confusing if you don't use the valet service. There is a parking garage at the back of the hotel but I actually never figured out how to get into it. I finally gave up and parked valet service. Upon checkin, the bellhop and valet, was polite and conversational. He took our bags to our room and even remembered our names when he saw us in the lobby afterward. We stayed in a King Superior room for around $300.00 per night. The room was very big with a nice couch and arm chair for sitting. We had a city view but our window was in front of the front door canopy so the view was partially obstructed. The bed was comfy and the nightly turndown service with chocolates was very classy. The room was complete with a wet bar but I thought the bottle of water should be complimentary instead of $5.00 for a $300.00 per night room. Keurig coffee is complimentary in the room but I didn't drink from the coffee cups after finding a little bit of lip stick on the coffee cup. The morning was very noisy. I tried to sleep late but I could hear doors slamming, toilet seats slamming, and just moving around. I'm not sure if it was guests checking out or housekeeping moving about from room to room. I was most dissappointed with being aggravated by housekeeping at 9:45 AM. I had already confirmed checkout was at 11:00 AM. At 9:45, I had to run to the door in my underwear to keep housekeeping from coming in. At a hotel this nice, you should not be pushed out the door by housekeeping at 9:45 AM. Other than that, my stay was enjoyable and the accommodations were above what you will find in a standard chain hotel. You are definitely paying for location at this property. The going rate for a downtown hotel is between 2 and 300 no matter where you stay. When I come again, I would consider staying here again but primarily because of the great location. The staff was great but price is really too high.

My wife, mother and I visited Asheville to go to the Biltmore Estate. My wife reserved a room in this hotel. Based on the photos, the hotel looked inviting. Upon arrival, Justin, the bell hop, greeted us and unloaded the car. He was very friendly and helpful. The management staff was very receptive. The room exactly matched the photo from the internet. The room was clean, spacious and very comfortable. The hotel is in an a refurbished department and is a historic hote. They have kept the spirit of the department store. This hotel definitely met and exceeded our expectations. It will be in our rotation for a vacation getaway.

The Haywood Park Hotel was recommended by a friend and I am so glad we decided to chose it as our hotel while in Ashville. It was easy to find, the service was great and the rooms were awesome!! The gentleman who checked us in (Ed) was kind and took helpful and took a lot of time answering our questions and recommending attractions. We were greeted with champagne and fresh fruit and started our vacation out on a great note. A special thanks to Justin (the valet) for taking such good care of us. We will definitely return and spend more time at this amazing hotel.

Room Tip: Be sure to read about the history of this hotel. Very interesting.

First trip to Asheville and this was one of the finest hotels we've stayed at. Great staff - valet parking, magnificent room, good gym on premises and right in the middle of everything. The included breakfast was at an attached Starbucks and, while not anything fancy, was a nice touch.
All of the charm of the vintage building's past as a department store added to the charm. Highly recommended!

If you like small hotels, this is a really god one. It is located in downtown Asheville, so it is convenient to walk, shop, and dine. It is only ten minutes from the entrance to the Biltmore Estate, if that is the purpose of your visit. It was constructed from an old department store building, so it has only about 33 rooms. There are lots of amenities, and the rooms are large. We were treated to a glass of sparkling wine in the afternoon and a bag of water and snacks when we checked out. The only negative is a little street noise.
