“A Gem”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

You want a home cooked Portuguese meal. This is your place. A lot of great seasoned dishes. You have to try the Shrimp appetizer. You won't be disappointed. The service is slow though, it's worth the wait.

“An Historic Old Place-- Making a Nice Comeback It Seems”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

The Bocce Club was a northern Rhode Island mainstay for years. It was THE place people went for family dinners, wedding receptions, anniversaries, etc-- famous all over for its "Chicken Family Style" dinners. (Actually, it's where Rhode Islands well'know chicken family style-- with salad, pasta, and potatoes-- was invented years and years ago back when the Italian immigrant community in Woonsocket actually did play the game bocce here!) But the years were not kind to the Bocce Club, it fell into disrepair, ownership changed hands, and the last time we visited (for Easter dinner about 8 or 9 years ago), it was a dump! Dirty & cold, and the food was barely edible. It was sad to see a nice old place fall so far. But the other day (prodded by a coupon for a $ 5.95 chicken dinner and some good word of moith we had picked up) we decided to give it a go. We had the chicken family style (under $ 30 for three, total, including drinks & tip-- it would be a few dollars more without the coupon). The decor is still dated-- very dated. It must cost a fortune to keep up a rambling old place like this. It could have been a little warmer and better lit. But the rugs and bathrooms were clean, the service was snappy (even though they were very busy) and the food was excellent-- the best chicken family style we've had in a long time (much better than the ballyhooed Wright's Farm; even better than our previous favorite, the Village Haven): everything was very fresh, and tasted like it came right out of the oven; there was a real antipasto (with salami and provolone), and not just the limp green salad you get most places; TWO kinds of potatoes (both french fries and oven roasted-- just like the Bocce used to do in the old days). Boy, were we pleased! It's nice to see one of the old places like the Bocce Clkub making a comeback, and we wish them well in their endeavors.
