A beautiful hike that is rewarded with an up close and personal view of the balanced rock and spectacular views of the valley below.

“Cool Rocks”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

Everyone likes this formation. Drive up to the trail head and then set off on foot to reach the rock. Bring water and sun protection as there is NO shade along the way and remember you still have to get back to your car. So bring enough water for everyone in your group. Take a picture with the rock and lift your arms to get a suspended effect. You will be rewarded with a nice breeze at the rock.

“Hot and Sunny”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013

Go early in the morning if it is a hot time of year. No shade, the hike is through the Chihuahuan desert. Fairly steep at the end. The balanced rock is kind of interesting, but it's not a hike I would do more than once. There are better hikes in Big Bend.

“This is where I take guests regularly.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

Its a short hike, through geological weirdness (which is always great - its a laccolith!) and then to get to this spot and get to hang out under this huge anomoly, in the shade with an even greater view to the East...woah! I love it here.

“Amazing view and great a photo opportunity!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2013

Bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water, it gets pretty hot along the way and there's not much shade.

In order to get to the Grapevine Hills Trail, which leads to the Balanced Rock, you have to drive down a narrow gravel road for about 6 miles. It's pretty rough on cars so you will need to take it slow around 10 - 12 mph. We took a rental car, Dodge Avenger, and it did great. You may need to pull over for someone coming from the opposite direction.

Once you get to the trail, the hike is 1.1 miles one-way so the round trip is 2.2 miles. It starts off as an easy walk but towards the end, you will start climbing up on the rocks. The last quarter mile is ALL uphill climbing, you can do it at a slow pace you just need to be careful. It goes up high but the view is amazing!!!

You will bond with lots of beautiful colored lizards and climb the last 1/4 of a mile but the view makes it all worth it, don't forget your camera. I look forward to hiking this trail again when I return.

Beautiful and easy trail to end your trip on!!!
