“Good Preparation With Flare”
Reviewed June 7, 2014

This is a fairly normal Japanese restaurant and sushi spot with a few nonstandard inspirations. It's about average for price and probably above average for quality. It's a bit out of the way in a side court off a strip mall that connects to the main drag, so it's easy to miss. Service was excellent both times we went. If you have a jones for japanese in Los Alamos, you're in pretty good shape with Origami.

“Not bad if you want to pay all the dollars.”
Reviewed May 9, 2014 via mobile

Prices went up here within the last two weeks. A salmon roll used to be around $5. Now it's $8? Really? Good thing there's another sushi place in town.

“Excellent service, mostly good food”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

Amy & I were recently treated to dinner at Origami in Los Alamos. The service this Friday was excellent! There were 3 waitpersons, a sushi chef, and someone else in the kitchen. They were all very gracious and friendly. The spicy tuna roll was excellent and quite spicy. A shrimp tempura roll was similarly delicious. However, the portions of ginger slices and wasabi were very small. The nigiri smoked salmon was disappointing, and we should have sent it back. The salmon was sliver thin and maybe because it was so thin, that was the reason it was dry?

The chicken dolsotkop had a really interesting presentation. It arrived uncooked in a super hot stone bowl. An egg was cracked over it and stirred into the rice, veggies, and chicken to cook it all at our table. Then, a hot sauce was added to our taste preference. It was mostly rice with skimpy chicken and veggies. But, it was tasty!

Our friends ordered chicken katsu. They shared this dish between themselves and said they really liked it and boxed up a little to take home. They also ordered a TNT roll. This had a spectacular presentation; it arrived as the menu said - "On Fire!" This VERY large roll was encased in aluminum foil shaped like a swan. It was on fire with blue flames rising up from the vodka that surrounded it on the plate. They also liked this roll; it was so big, they boxed some up to take home.

All told, it was a mostly good dinner, with some of our selections being excellent, and some not so good. We like this restaurant for sushi much better than the other sushi restaurant in Los Alamos where the owner / waitress is sometimes unfriendly or distant.

“Service so bad it ruined the birthday celebration”
Reviewed March 26, 2014

One terrible thing after another took place: First, they claimed they didn't have my reservation which I had made two days in advance for a party of six; when we were seated we told our server (who was also the owner) that we were going to a local concert that evening and needed to leave the restaurant one and a half hours after the time of our reservation; then it took more than ten minutes to be given a menu; ten more minutes to get water; when we ordered we reminded our owner/server of our time constraint; the owner/server mixed up whose meals came with soup and salad and one of the people who was supposed to get both was never given either -- he didn't pursue getting them because it was getting so late; our six dinners not only didn't arrive at the same time, but they arrived over a period of a half hour, with the last arriving only ten minutes before we had to leave; we asked for the bill when the last dinner was served and the owner/server told us she would bring it when we were done eating; we said "no," that we needed it now because we had to leave so soon; nevertheless, our bill was not brought and we had to stand up and move towards the door before the bill was provided! And there was no time to get a bithday dessert for our birthday person. It was awful, and though we live in Los Alamos, and have few restaurants in town, we will not be returning to Origami.

“Translucent sushi isn't supposed to be this expensive”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

If you are craving sushi in Los Alamos this is the best place to go... but don't expect much higher quality than grocery store sushi. Rice was a bit on the dry side. Despite asking for extra wasabi and ginger the staff seem to hand it out in tiny rations. I had the dragon roll lunch special for around $20. The nigiri was so thinly cut you could see light through it. The dragon roll had very little eel on it and the California roll that it covered was lack luster. The lunch special is pricey for the quantity and quality you get. None the less give this place a try as their menu has more than just sushi and you might find something you like.
