“Tasteless”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2012

Don't know what happened. Cafe Oggi used to be great, served tasty regional Italian and even had (has?) an interesting mailer. We didn't get past the appetizers. Imagine previously frozen calamari completely rubbery beneath their unseasoned breadcrumb coating. When asked for an alternative to bottled seafood sauce dip, what arrived was generic, not homemade mayonaise with a few bottled capers tossed in. Iceberg salad was not well chopped. The bottled water was reliable, but why wouldn't it be. The accompanying bread was old, cold, soft and not even as good as the local french or Italian at the Balducci's walkable from the restaurant. It didn't even come with butter. One taste of our appetizers and we arranged to skip the main courses. We couldn't trust them to cook something that wouldn't made us ill. The restaurant temperature was about sixty degrees and they had ceiling fans running. Most of the sparse patrons were rubbing their arms and we noticed that no one around belonged to the clean plate club.

“welcoming service, great food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2012

Went with my family (4 children, admittedly well behaved) to this fine upscale restaurant. We were made genuinely welcome, and felt valued. The food was superior, the wine list appropriate, and we'd definitely go back. Kids were clamoring for extra desserts (homemade) especially the peach ice.

“Well Established Italian Restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2012

Have been going to Oggi for years and have always enjoyed it. It is a McLean classic and never a disappointment. Very nice wine list and well done fish dishes. Try the veal cannelloni with the aurora sauce. Worth the calories!

“NOT ITALIAN”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2012

There is nothing Italian about the food at this restaurant. It is, however, apparently a south american/central american take on it.

“WOW - How can such a bad place get good reviews?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2012

My Mother and I went on a very quiet Monday night. We had a restaurant.com coupon and thought we'd try this place since it has been well reviewed often (but probably not since the early 2000's). We had something important to celebrate.

The service was very slow (nearly non-existent), borderline surly, and unprofessional. It could have been because we were 2 women, or because we had a coupon. Presumably they are engaged with restaurant.com because they are trying to BUILD clientele. You'd never know it!

The menu is very brief and incomplete - for example, there is not one beef entree, only one chicken, veal 2 ways, and calve's liver. One regular fish dish, and the fish of the day was tillapia - get real, that's not a fish for a cafe that touts itself as upscale Italian.

There were only 5 pasta dishes on the menu - none very attractive sounding. I chose 2 appetizers, calamari and carpaccio. The calamari was lightly battered and properly fried, but with no seasoning and acompanied by a "marinara" that was probably crushed tomatoes straight from the can - NO Seasoning. I got about 10 tentacle sections in this serving and about a dozen body slices of squid. Tentacles are NOT preferred portions.

The carpaccio was not seasoned (sea salt and a drizzle of good extra virgin olive oil are the classic way of doing this). It was buried under a mound of assorted greens, and no one at any time offered fresh cracked black pepper over it.

My mother's veal marsala was OK, but the side dish of potato was very over cooked as were the vegetables on the plate.

There were 4 desserts on the menu. The peach sorbet that my mother requested, they didn't have. The tiramisu did not match the menu description and I strongly suspect was a Costco purchase.

They added a tip of 18% per the coupon and I insisted they recompute the bill without service added due to the incredibly poor service. I still left 15%, but let them know that not much had been satisfactory about the entire experience. I suspect they did not call in the restaurant.com coupon because I usually get a request for a review from restaurant.com after a coupon has been used. They probably are afraid the review will look like this.

STAY AWAY - FAR AWAY from this place.
