This place looks great. It's got a nice look about it, fairly comfortable and cozy. But the food. 2 out of the three meals ordered were inedible. The third was just not that great. I ordered mussels and they made me vomit immediately. It was a combination of the horrific scent and sewer taste. The grilled shrimp was beautifully displayed but were mushy and once it had been removed from the shell barely any food remained. The shrimp pasta was OK, but kind of sloppy and mushy. The chocolate lava cake was cold in the center - not very good. What astonished me was that they charged us for the mussels! For 3, the cost was over $100 and we couldn't even eat 2 of our entrees or the dessert. Very disappointing.

“absolutely wonderfully French”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

We decided to try Bistro Vivant since we were in the area on business. Don't let the location in a strip mall deter you. We were wowed, and will definitely go back. The restaurant is well-appointed, cozy, and comfortable, the food was divine, and the service impeccable. We started with appetizers: Villeroi Mussels - which were steamed in a Pernod sauce, were tender and tasty; and Apple and Chestnut soup, the soup de jour, was delightful - not sweet, but smooth and slightly creamy (not heavy). For the main dish we had Lobster pasta, with chunks of lobster plus a full tail from a small lobster; and Amish chicken with local kale - tasty and perfectly juicy and tender. We were stuffed, and opted out of dessert (all but one selection is made on the premises). Our server, Diane, was friendly and attentive. The owner even stopped by to ask what we thought of our dinner. Kudos to the chef! And yes, we will be back! They play a mixture of mostly French music played, mixed in with a bit of American/English.

“Excellent Halibut”
Reviewed December 4, 2013

Much enjoyed this casual French influenced venue in the center of McLean. Not crowded or noisy on a Saturday night which made it great to dine with old friends. Good menu and service plus the Chef's special of halibut just flown in that afternoon.

“Good food, service needs improvement”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

My wife and I went here for a late lunch on Saturday. They have outdoor seating which is nice, although there's not much to look at except a parking lot and fairly busy street. We chose to dine inside. They have a good variety of selections on the lunch menu. We had onion soup, escargot, lamb meatballs, and butternut squash gnocchi. All were very good...the gnocchi, which was served in a sage-based sauce was outstanding. I tried the Creme Brule, the filling of which was based on jasmine tea, did not appeal to me.

Service was slow given the time of day we were there. There was a long delay between getting our drinks (wine) and when our order was taken.

“Outstanding French Bistro food”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

enjoyed a terrific lunch at this French bistro --
much better than one would suspect from the outside, which is in a strip shopping mall.

Both the food and the service were outstanding -- and of the quality I'd expect in a major
downtown city.

I will definitely come back here again next time I am in McLean.
