Hidden from view of the beltway bridge is an area that is powerful in the great amount of water that flows over the falls and nearby Carter Rock where climbers practice their climbing skills

the water falls were very pretty, the whole lake was nice. There are a few different paths to walk, some that take you along the rock looking down at the river and others in the woods. we saw people kayaking, climbing rocks, and picnicing.

Traveled for a week to DC, Williamsburg and Virginia Beach and this was one of my favorite stops. Who would have thought such a beautiful park would be in the middle of DC? We stopped on our warm home from Virginia Beach based on a suggestion from my boss. You could make this a 1/2 day trip or just a 1/2 hour stop like we did. An absolutely beautiful, breathtaking sight! I wish I would have included this as a tip on my hotel review to tell more people about it. A friend who drives a tour bus and has been to DC hundreds of times had never even heard of this hidden gem. There is a $5 per car fee to enter the park but it's so worth it. Hope to return to this park again!

If you go here plan on making it a day event. Based on the traffic in the area it will take you some time to gt there, explore and then additional time to get home. Recommend leaving as early to go there as possible as it can get crowded, especially in the summer months. BE CAREFUL on the rocks they are very slippery.

What a gem this park is! The falls themselves are stunning, and the park provides three different overlooks. The park is well served, with a snack bar and a small learning building. They also provide the Junior Ranger program that many national park locations have, which my kids love.

Once you're done gaping at the powerful falls, you can go on some of the pretty hiking trails. A short hike leads you back to the remains of the canal / lock system built by George Washington in the 1800's for commercial traffic to bypass the falls. I LOVE when my kids can see actual history in action. They had just studied the fall line and 1800's commerce in school, so they thought it was neat.

Big, grassy picnic area with grills and tables. Dogs on leash ok (and common).

A warning, this is a rocky park, and one of the overlooks requires some clambering over rocks. The hiking trail along the river has plenty of places with steep and treacherous drops. A toddler on the hiking trail along the river (past the overlooks, into the woods) would be scary. If you have small children, be prepared to supervise closely.
