“happily surprised”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2013

I didnt read great reviews about this place but it was the first suggestion given to us when we asked the owner of the Camp Hill B&B where we should eat.

The prices were great - nice selection of wine.

We had the portabello mushroom appetizer that was fabulous - the first night we got home I went out to get the ingredients to try to make it at home!

I had the cajun steak - flavorful. The potatoes were a bit blah. Would have rather had other choices for a side. My husband had the pasta.... super yummy, just the right amount of garlic.

We finished with the chocolate lava cake thing. It was good but what you would expect - nothing amazing. Could have used some icecream. Would have liked to see some more original homemade dessert options.

We would totally go again and enjoyed our meal.

“What a pleasant TREAT”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013

My wife and I were biking on the C&O Towpath and stayed at the Econo Lodge three blocks from this delightful restaurant. We walked, just to get a different form of exercise, to have our dinner one night. This is a great place, clean, great food, reasonable prices, very friendly, fast service, and quite convenient. We enjoyed our meal and beer relaxing at a table rather than a campsite and a picnic table or the ground. We will go back here if we are ever in this area again.

“Okay food, cute place”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

The description of this place on the Bolivar/Harper's Ferry tourist map was "Casual dining in a rustic atmosphere." Which is pretty accurate. We went for lunch. There's lots of parking in the back and across the street. The atmosphere is cute and country. For lunch no one was sitting in the main dining room, which seemed nice -- there were only people in the bar area and adjacent room. The waitress was really nice, and they had a good local beer on tap. The food came out slowly and it wasn't too exciting. I had a crab cake sandwich for $10 -- for $2 extra I could have gotten french fries or cole slaw. I actually kind of appreciated that I didn't have french fries by default because I don't need them, but if they're there, I'll eat them. The crab cake was decent, not amazing, and the bread was nice and lightly toasted. My husband had a "hippie salad" which had a small amount of grilled portabello and some onions and peppers that were grilled with oil, making it all kind of greasy. It was also a small salad for $9.50. So, not that great, but probably pretty average for the area.

“Excellent atmosphere, but it's about the food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

Our trip to the Anvil was not first for the evening, but the restaurant we wanted to go to was closed for the July 4th Holiday. The Anvil has ample parking in the rear with both a side and a front entrance for easy access.

The restaurant itself is lovely inside, with oak tables and chairs in the bar area (where we sat) and a large dining area with tables of all sizes with white table clothes.

The waitress was friendly and responsive, which was certainly one of the highlights of the evening.

For an appetizer, we split a french onion soup that was very good. For dinner, we ordered the West Virginia trout with a honey pecan sauce and one of the evening specials that is on the regular menu, the New York strip. It is the latter where we ran into our problem.

When the steak arrived, it looked and smelled great. The first cut showed a lovely pink center, cooked medium rare as ordered, but the only way to describe the taste was putrid. It was inedible. Both of us tried a bite to ensure it was not just one person's perception, but this steak was just wrong.

We called the waitress over and as nicely as we could told her there was something wrong. She immediately offered to get us a new steak, but we declined and just shared the fish. She did not charge us for the steak nor the dessert we subsequently ordered. The dessert and coffee were very good.

The waitress immediately reported the problem and the kitchen staff did try to determine what might have happened. That at least gained them some points that it was not just us.

We would go back due to the one very good meal, excellent decor, and the very good service, but another bad meal would change our decision.
