“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2013

We stayed 3 nights of the Memorial Day Weekend at the Old Rittenhouse Inn in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Our room was wonderful...(room 7). Very spacious, lovely decor, beautiful, if partial, view of Lake Superior, great service of accomodations(room made up on return from a delicious breakfast) . We enjoyed a fabulous dinner on Sat. with a unique
verbal presentation of the menu.
Staff very helpful. Especially enjoyed sitting on the porch swing with our coffee after breakfast enjoying the view of Lake Superior. Loved it!

My wife and I stayed one night in Room V.
We purchased one of the Living Social deals, but were unable to make our initial reservation because of the 8 plus inches of snow in late April. Apparently it did not snow in Bayfield that weekend (although every website said it did) and they were VERY unfriendly when trying to reschedule. We got charged a $25 fee for "canceling" and then were only able to stay one night as opposed to the 2 on the Living Social because we weren't able to get back up there until 2 or 3 days after the deal ended. When we were on the phone rescheduling the lady stated that we had put them in a "bad position" as others had inquired into rooms and were turned away because the rooms were full. So I went online, looking to make a reservation for that very same day, and there were at least 3 open rooms at the exact same rate our initial room was in. So they really had not been turning people away for that weekend and there was no reason to make us feel guilty for not wanting to drive 4 hours in 8 plus inches of snow, but I guess that is just the way they do business.

When we finally did get to the B&B, the room was okay. The fact that you actually need to pay extra for more than a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast really bothered me. (You also get "breads" although I'm not sure who in the world would want to eat cheese/garlic/chive biscuits for breakfast???)
One lady at check in was nice, although the only things she had to say about the room when we checked in were the problems with the room (fireplace doesn't work, but you get $1.48 credit, so it's totally worth not having it work!!!) Oh, she also showed us how to work the shower (because, you know, showers are a new phenomenon in Bayfield I guess). Regardless she was by far the friendliest staff person we encountered.
The rest of the staff were pretty bland and even rude. No "you are welcome" when I said "thank you" from the hostess, pretty basic manners that my 3 year old has but none of the staff members have. Getting Equal at breakfast for my coffee/oatmeal was an incredibly difficult task that took 2 waitresses, twenty minutes, and ended with the really rude one simply slamming 10 packets down (in a glass holder) and immediately turning around and walking away. They did not even ask how our stay was when we checked out. They do that at $40 a night motels, but apparently it's too hard for the $200 plus dollar a night B&B.

Needless to say we will never go back and if anyone asks for a recommendation I will definitely let them know to skip the Old Rittenhouse Inn. Horrible value, below average food (unless you want to pay even MORE money) and a rude staff.

In February this reviewer purchased our Living Social Package, which offered a 2-night stay in a whirlpool room with our hearty 2-course breakfast included each morning. Old Rittenhouse Inn offered 5 specific rooms for this package and nearly 3-months for purchasers to redeem their vouchers. This reviewer reserved accommodations within the first 2-days of the promotion.

Contrary to the reviewer's opinion, there definitely came a point that some Living Social guests were turned away, or asked to find alternate travel dates, because the allotted rooms had already been filled. What some people don't recognize is that, unlike a retail situation, once a day passes, lodging losses cannot be recovered. Last-minute cancellations greatly effect a small, seasonal business like ours. That is why the terms and conditions of the Living Social promotion were very clearly stated. Having purchased the package, the reviewer agreed to these terms. Old Rittenhouse Inn honored its end of the agreement in full.

When a winter storm was predicted for late April, the reviewer's wife called 2-days prior to arrival to determine how a cancellation would be handled. It was explained that a $25 cancellation fee would be incurred (as with all reservations) and the reservation could be transferred to a new date within the promotional timeframe. As no snow had yet fallen, we recommended that they wait to make their decision about canceling until the weather could be evaluated. The caller became irate and stated, "If we come, we come, if we don't, we don't." She was asked to let us know if they decided not to travel to Bayfield, so staff would not be awaiting an arrival that wouldn't be coming. At that point, the caller hung up without another word.

Old Rittenhouse Inn is not responsible for the weather, nor cancellations due to the weather. It was the reviewer's choice to cancel the contract they had agreed to. The majority of guests that particular weekend (some from the same vicinity and suburb as the reviewers) did in fact make the trip to Bayfield. There was 6-8" of snow, but the roads were plowed and the conditions were decent.

When the reviewers inquired about rescheduling, the terms of their Living Social Agreement were reiterated. Because they were unable to reschedule before the promotion expired, it was explained that although the Living Social Package had an expiration, the promotional value for which they paid had no expiration. Even though the agreement terms should have resulted in full forfeiture of their voucher for a last-minute cancellation, we generously offered a certificate valued at $220.87, the amount paid for the Living Social voucher, to use anytime.

The reviewer was notified that the fireplace in the Room V was out of order when they rescheduled, (this is also posted on our website) so they definitely knew in advance. They chose a Saturday Only Stay which typically incurs a $35 surcharge. This fee was waived by management, and an offer was also presented to secure their room at the off-season rate, which saved the guests another $35.

The Old Rittenhouse Inn prides itself on personalized customer service. We escort all guests to their rooms and point out specific features to make sure they know where to find things and how everything works. The shower fixture in Room 5 is atypical to most people, so we always make a point to show guests how to use it. Would the reviewer have preferred to trek down to our front desk in their pajamas for an explanation?

Our expanded continental breakfast is quite substantial, including coffee or tea, juice, fresh bakery (both sweet and savory options), a choice of cereal (steel cut oats, house made granola, or special K), and fruit du jour (usually a parfait or cobbler). The reviewers had the option of ordering hot entrees and side dishes, but chose not to.

Management met with wait staff to discuss the service details the review describes, which of course is contrary to our philosophy of hospitality and everything we teach our staff.

Old Rittenhouse Inn was pleased with the Living Social guests who visited this spring. All but two reviews (out of 200 redeemed vouchers) rated their experience as excellent. Clearly our property was not a good match for these guests, and they arrived with a chip on their shoulder. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to overcome the impression they had already formed before arrival.

We just stayed at the Old Rittenhouse in Bayfield, Wi. The rooms are very nice and well appointed. their top of the line rooms are Absolutely fabulous. The rooms are very quite, something you do not see in most Bed and Breakfast outfits. The breakfast served to us was very very good. Their dinner menu looks very good, however we were there during the off season and they were not serving dinner on a Monday night. I strongly recommend the Old Rittenhouse Inn for a great Lake Superior getaway.

The room, #8, was lovely with beautiful, backlit stained glass windows, fireplace and our own private entrance off the balcony. The dinner and 2 breakfasts we ate there were all superb! We loved everything but our absolute favorites were the smoked trout/wild rice salad and the rare duck breast. Every single staff person was outstanding from check-in, dinner servers, breakfast server and check-out. Of course, the house itself is remarkable as is the view. It was a wonderful experience!

Room Tip: Being older, we enjoyed the first floor room with private entrance.

My girlfriend and I purchased a 2-night LivingSocial getaway deal which included a two nights stay in one of the main rooms (not X, XI, XII) to be used before May 14 (Spring season) and also included the complete breakfast option for both mornings ($12.50/person/day). Since we wanted to go around May there were limited openings on the weekend due to wedding season and such, but we're able to book a room with a lake view, queen size bed, fireplace, and whirlpool in the similar Victorian Le Chateau for a Sunday and Monday stay. Upon arrival on Sunday, we were pleasantly surprised when we were asked if we would like to upgrade to one of the king suites in the Rittenhouse Inn which would be vacant for the next two nights. As soon as we saw room XI we immediately felt quite fortunate. The room was huge and in addition to the king-size bed, whirlpool, and fireplace (in two distinct parts of the large quarters), there was a window with sitting room in the bed area with views of Lake Superior and also an extremely spacious balcony which afforded great sun soaking opportunities in the afternoon.

The place is quite quiet, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the food was abundant and delicious. We had the 5 course meal on Sunday night and each day enjoyed the 3-course breakfast which allowed us to skip lunch.

Room Tip: Room XI is the largest, main king suite with the large balcony which is covered by the sun most of t...

My husband and I received a gift certificate as a wedding gift (5 years ago) and finally got to put it to use. We stayed during my husband's birthday April 26-28, 2013. The whole experience was fabulous. We reserved Room 11, which was so beautiful, tastfully decorated and romantic! We really enjoyed how it felt like our own little retreat. The weekend we picked was perfect too. Bayfield had weather in the 70's during the "spring that never came". We walked all over town and enjoyed meeting the town's people. The dinner experience was elegant from the time the waiter presented the verbal menu. Checking out was like leaving old friends. We purchased a christmas ornament for our tree to remember the experience. Such a beautiful place! Thank you so much for an extraordinary experience. It was worth the wait and I can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: Our room was quiet and comfortable. If you want full views of the lake, pick a room on the front or...
