We've stayed at many B&Bs around the country and this was by far, the worst experience for a B&B. Every B&B we have ever stayed at offers a full breakfast, this one does not. They do not offer anything above and beyond a room. They are taking their guests for granted. They have obviously become complacent as they have one of the nicest properties in town, and I suppose feel they don't have to offer the extra touches that people want when they stay at a B&B. They should take a lesson from others that offer afternoon receptions, full breakfast, bathroom amenities (make sure you bring your own!), robes, newspapers, books/games, room service, etc. We weren't even allowed to use the fireplace in the room! You're also better off booking last minute apparently because then they will give you a free bottle of wine or a free full breakfast as they did for other guests who booked last minute during our stay. We apparently were penalized for booking 8 months in advance. Front desk staff is aloof and couldn't care less about guest service. Our radio didn't work in the room and no one fixed it for us despite two requests. The location is great, but the prices they are charging don't line up with the amenities they offer.

Room Tip: Rooms 3 & 4 have views of the lake, but do have street noise. Room 3 bed is terribly uncomfortab...

While Old Rittenhouse Inn was the first Bed and Breakfast in the State of Wisconsin, we truly operate more like a small hotel. We have grown to include 20 guest rooms and suites in 3 historic homes, plus a full service gourmet restaurant serving breakfast and dinner to the public as well as our house guests. Perhaps what this reviewer is missing from the Old Rittenhouse Inn is the hands-on experience found at many small B&Bs. We are more like a small elegant hotel, and while we certainly want to pamper our guests, we also are very careful not to hover and be over-attentive. We try to strike a balance, and sometimes it is not what people expected. We are certainly very sorry if any of our employees behaved in a way that seemed aloof or inattentive. We make every effort to train our employees to be warm, gracious, and accommodating. Regarding the use of fireplaces in August, it is the hottest month of the year and with central air and window units all in constant use, we do not set the fireplaces during that time. We are a charter member of Travel Green Wisconsin, and not using the fireplaces during the "hot season" is part of our commitment to the environment. We hope this reviewer's next Bayfield experience is everything they are looking for.

We just celebrated our 10th anniversary @ Rittenhouse. It was SPECTACULAR! From the suite we had(room10) to the fabulous 5 course dinner to the staff! As a surprise we decided to renew our vows, Wendy was a terrific help every step of the way. We had the ceremony at the Chateau gardens overlooking Lake Superior and it was breathtaking! Mark & Wendy made our day so special, we can't thank them enough. After our ceremony we had dinner back at the Landmark in Rittenhouse. Jerry was SO welcoming and took such pride when telling us the menu. My husband thinks he could make plain mac n' cheese sound 5 star! Bottom line-we had a wonderful time, everything was PERFECT! We WILL be back!

Room Tip: For a more luxurious feel & grand view choose rooms 10, 11 or 12 all on the 3rd floor.

We had supper here. Did not stay. The meal was superb as was the service and the attitudes of all of the staff. Four of us ordered 4 different entrees, and each was exceptional. It's pricy, but well worth it, and I'm tight.

Elegant accommodations in a good location for walking to shops, restaurants, and ferry out to the Apostle Islands. Great breakfast included. Dinner a bit pricey, and waiter's verbal menu recitation pretentious. For delicious food at reasonable prices and fun amid the flamingos, try Maggie's for dinner at least one night in Bayfield. No elevator to get luggage upstairs, but convenient off-street parking. Lovely flowers and porch for outside relaxation.

Excellent stay at the Old Rittenhouse Inn. We stayed in the oriental motif room. Very clean with great amenities. Great staff and a wonderful breakfast. Would've had dinner but a wedding had been booked for the night we were there. Good access to all of the sights in Bayfield and great views from the porch. Can't wait to go back.

Nice family run hotel in the beautiful Bayfield area. Each room is decorated in a different style of the beginning-mid 19th century. Excellent breakfast with incredible quantities. We did not try out doning, but the menu looked very exciting. Free parking and wifi and close to the centre of Bayfield. Good place to stay in the area.

It was our first time in Bayfield and we were very happy with Old Rittenhouse. Room was comfortable and clean. The service was excellent. And the food....wow...every breakfast and dinner was awesome. I thought is was very thoughtful of our breakfast server to wrap up our leftover rolls and muffins to take with us for the rest of the day. I would stay here again!! The only reason I didn't give it an "excellent" is because there is no television. My hubby would have liked a TV somewhere in the Inn.
