“Surprising Greatness in Greeneville Tn”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2013

We had an excellent dinner at the Brumley the first weekend in October. Came based on word of mouth.

Server brought yeast rolls and precious butter pats in leaf shapes: that was really charming and elevated our expectations. Dinner thankfully lived up to its promise.

Tomato basil soup: fresh and rich tasting and reminiscent of a marinara in flavor; she-crab soup creamy, full of crabmeat with robust flavor and a hint of heat.

Ribeye steak with country mustard cooked medium well: good flavor, mustard strong but not overpowering, flavor of steak good but I suspect was not pasture-raised; served with lightly sauteed green beans. Switched potatoes for steamed broccoli (potatoes possibly a better accompaniment but I am avoiding starches). Broccolli was just broccolli.

Chicken piccatta with angel hair pasta pronounced very good; lemon flavor very subtle: chicken tender and moist and tasty.

Chevre stuffed quail was tender, full flavored, crispy outside; cauliflower puree was delicious, steamed broccolli was just steamed broccolli.

Jack and chocolate cake was best of three desserts tried. Whisky flavor subtle yet balanced the strong choc.taste.

Earl Grey creme brulee: tea flavor interesting and interesting but a little disconcerting to see the greyish tint to the creme .Still, very very tasty.

Final dessert the apple caramel cheesecake: a light cheesecake of excellent flavor topped with three Granny Smith apple slivers and a zigzag of caramel and a touch of whipped cream. Cheesecake wonderful on its own, caramel added extra sweetness.

Server on point and on time, friendly without interfering.

All in all a very, very pleasant evening.

I could wish that not every entree came with a heavy starch, but that pleases most people, and I was allowed to swap a starch for a different vegetable. Chef hasn't fallen into the trap of saucing or breading veggies or smothering flavor of veg with cheese. Ingredients fresh and obviously made on site; thank you very much.

“Upscale food with a welcoming atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

While house hunting I had an occasion to eat at this restaurant more than half a dozen times, sampling a lot of things from the menu over two seasons. After the second visit I was treated like family. The restaurant, itself is in the General Morgan Hotel in downtown Greeneville, which has been lovingly restored. They take advantage of the fact that they are in an area that is largely agricultural and many local farms are transitioning to organic practices. The salad combinations were delightful and surprising and the size was far larger than you would expect for a "side" salad. The menu changes to take advantage of seasonally available products twice a year. If you have a special request, they are more than happy to try to oblige you. The wine list, while a little thin, does offer a "tasting" option so that you get smaller pours of three different wines, which I really liked as it allowed me to have a different wine with my salad and to try new selections with my entree. You won't be disappointed.

What a wonderful place. Faithfully restored dining room in the downtown hotel has the grace and elegance of by gone days. This combined with an excellent staff and a wonderful menu makes for a totally relaxed and enjoyable meal. The daily lunch features a small buffet in addition to the menu items. The buffet always has a great asssortment of foods with one item, the chicken salad being a daily item. It is on the buffet or you can order it off the menu where it comes with fresh fruit and wonderful banana bread. Quiet elegance with a wonderful staff makes for a very enjoyable meal. I have lunch there at least once a week.

Driving in the area to visit President Johnson's home, I decided to lunch at Brumley's in the General Morgan Inn.

The Inn is beautiful and it would be interesting to stay overnight some time. The restaurant was delightful with a more formal setting than a usual luncheon - which suited me just fine. I was able to look out unto Main Street and see the lovely scenery while I dined alone.

First off, the coffee was wonderful! I had a hankering for a good cup and wasn't disappointed. After being on the road, a nice sit down lunch was what I wanted and the rib eye steak was a great choice. I choose to have potato pancakes instead of potatoes. The breads that accompanied the lunch were excellent too.

Service was typical for the setting and friendly servers made it a nice week-end experience.

They serve a brunch on the week-end and not their regular menu, so be aware of that fact. There is a good choice for a meal so in no way is this a negative option. It was a quiet and peaceful lunch more suited for couples/adults than for children.
