Lake Meredith National Recreation Area and Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument are close to the town of Fritch, Texas (we spent the night in Borger). Lake Meredith has lost much of its water over the last few years. Apparently, there are varying theories as to why. Some say that the water is being dammed upstream and some say that the vegetation is too thirsty. Whatever the reason, the boat ramps have to be extended. The Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument is operated by Lake Meredith and is a few miles up the road towards Amarillo. You can only visit this national monument by guided tour, which you have to reserve ahead of time. The tour lasts about an hour and is pretty interesting – particularly when you wander across the flint scraps.
