Great quaint little place. The wine was basic but reasonably priced and a great accompaniment to the seafood. The Wedge salad was cold and refreshing, and the Crab Cioppino for two was simply put, one of the best things I've ever eaten. If you are looking for a great representation of a classic SF dish, this Sotto Mare is a must.

My wife and I loves seafood and San Francisco is a great place for seafood. We found Sotto Mare online and decided that we will make a stop when we arrived in San Francisco.

The Cioppino there is indeed one of the best meals we had our entire trip. Deliciously cooked seafood in fresh tomate puree-liked sauce. It is so good, it will just leave you craving for more.

The place can get a bit crowded so be sure to make a reservation if you would like to dine here, or be like us and arrive early, preferably when they open for service in the evening.

The service there was good. Servers were very friendly and helpful.

We also tried their fresh oysters. They do not have much variety but, the oysters are of good size and tasted very fresh.

So if you are looking for a good seafood experience in SF, this place should indeed be considered.

There were not many pictures of the location itself on the web so we did not know what to expect. The main dining area is small, but I understand there was another room that we did not enter. While the quarters were tight, the food was excellent as was the service. We had to wait about 20 minutes or so as were offered a complimentary glass of wine. We had a mix of fresh fish and pasta and loved every bit of it! We witnessed the owner(?)/manager running in and out of the place on the phone clearly speaking with someone important. Shortly thereafter the two tables next to us were cleared and the Governor of Hawaii and his entourage arrived. He had clearly been there before and we thought it must be good if he comes here!

This is a city with an enormous amount of great restaurant choices. This should be on your list of them to try.

This place advertises the best damn cioppino in town, and when they make that kind of claim in San Francisco, they better hold up their end of the deal, and boy, did they ever!
Fantastic cioppino - can't wait to go back and try something else, but every time I end up going, I always succumb to the lure of the cioppino! Great meal!

This is a great little seafood restaurant specializing in clams, mussels and cioppino. The atmosphere is very rustic, bustling, and casual. The seafood is fresh, top quality, and well prepared, while the prices are reasonable. My husband and I started with cups a of clam chowder which was not only very good, but a very generous portion. Next we moved to a combination of clams and mussels (about 40 to 45 shellfish per serving), in a nice buttery, garlicy broth that was excellent for dipping their fresh bread. Since we had been eating our way through SF, we shared this and were very glad we did. We stumbled onto this place on a Thursday evening about 7:00 p.m. and the place was packed with smiling, friendly diners. We did not have reservations and had a 40 minute wait, but their pagers reach to a little wine bar across the street and we were able to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine and a great cheese plate while we waited. I do recommend getting reservations though. We sat at the bar in front of the kitchen and were able to see all the dishes being prepared. Nearby diners were giving rave reviews for their cioppino (house specialty and all shellfish are well cracked and it is served in a huge soup tureen, big enough for 2) as well as the sand dabs, which looked great, as well. We will definitely go back.
