“Great Food and Service”

We had the cioppino was delicious, wanted more. Walked in at 8pm on a Monday night and had to wait 20 min, but got offered a free wine while we waited. Staff were really friendly and went out of their way to help customers. If I went back to San Fran would definitely return here

“Three years later, still great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2013

Returned to Sotto Mare again this trip after going for the 1st time in 2010. This time we brought friends, again, everything was delicious. Our group of 4 had the Sand Dabs, Scallop Saute, Cioppino and Salmon. All were outstanding. Service was attentive and friendly.

My thanks to the staff of Sotto Mare for another outstanding experience.

“casual, homey atmosphere with good seafood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

had lunch at sotto mare, the cioppino for which it is known. lots of crab along with some mussels, clams, shrimp, squid and fish in a tomato broth. the broth was slightly blander than i would have preferred, but adding some salt, pepper and hot pepper helped a lot. the portion was generous, and indeed plenty for two after we also shared a wedge of lettuce with blue cheese. we had a bottle of not-too-oaky california chardonnay recommended by our waitress. the service was attentive and very friendly, with bibs tied around our necks and admonitions not to be afraid to use our hands to break open the crab. there was a roll of paper towels on a stand to clean ourselves up as we ate. we had an outside table, and an older gentleman wandered along from the street, asked how our cioppino was, and opened the lid on the tureen to see what kind of dent we'd made. we thought he was some kind of street person, but it turned out he was the owner. all in all a fun and memorable meal.

“Great original place in San Francisco”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

We were looking for a place, which feels like home without all the whistle and bells of a fancy place but the food is also great. We found it! This is a great seafood Italian seafood restaurant the menu is not rich but the food is and enough to order. The service is mediocre but it is a part of the deal. RSTMN 8/10

“Following the Trip Advisor food trail in San Fran”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

Having read the reviews about Sotto Mare, I suggested this place to friends for an early dinner before the St Patrick's day mad dinner rush. It is a small place in the Italian section of San Francisco and at 6 pm it was already packed. We managed to get a table outside and watched the tipsy young crowd in green exiting the pubs, which made for an interesting watch while waiting for our meals. We had the Ciopinno, a glorious bowl of seafood: crabs, prawns, squid, pasta, mussels in a rich and flavorful tomato based sauce. It was really good and can be shared by two or three people depending on whether you had an entree, I had a small bowl of clam chowder, while one companion had a crab salad, both delicious. My friends asked me how I learned about this place since I was not from San Francisco, I said that I just followed the Trip Advisor food trail. Thank you previous reviewers.
