Happened to be in downtown SF on a weekday at lunchtime and decided to try the Educated Palate. We were a party of 10, and were seated within a few minutes. The person in charge kind of gave us the run down on what to expect. This was the first day of their spring menu, so we should expect a few glitches. Some of the students were new at serving and the menu was new to the "chefs". Drink orders were taken and delivered within about 15 minutes. Water, bread & butter served shortly thereafter. Lunch orders taken after that. Then came the wait - one full hour before the meals were brought to the table. It definitely was not the servers fault, as there were at least 12 milling around the restaurant. The food was good, not exceptional, but well presented and tasty. I'd probably go back again, but not the first day of a new menu!

When we learned our hotel was only a couple of blocks away we jumped at the chance to make a dinner reservation as Thursdays is the only day an evening meal is served. Everyone from the maitre d' to the chefs and entire wait staff made our dinner a memorable one. Each student seemed more intent than the last to insure we had a pleasant dining experience. My husband and I enjoyed talking and getting to know a little bit about each of them and what had brought them to culinary school. The 3 course dinner was exceptional and a tremendous value at 21 dollars per person. The dining room is street facing with a quiet and lovely ambiance. However, please do not expect speedy service. Out of the corner of our eye we caught our waitress going over how to present and open our selected bottle of wine with her instructor.
Truly one of our favorite evenings in San Francisco.

The chefs and wait staff here are culinary students and give you extra special care and food presentation. I was here for lunch and had a lovely pork loin, risotto, and steamed greens combo - all for under $11. The meal was topped off by a cappuccino (the server told us he made it 3 times to get it "just right") and cookie sampler. You can choose from a varied selection of salads, sandwiches or entrees; I believe the menu changes weekly but you have about six options in each category. The service can be slow at times, I'm told, but our service was very good. You'll have to be sure school is in session or the restaurant will be closed! They're located in downtown San Francisco near Union Square and the Financial District so it's a cost effective, convenient, and tasty option for lunch or dinner.

The food was a fantastic value. We didn't know it was part of the school until we were leaving. I highly recommend it to anyone at the Moscone Center who is looking for a quiet, sit-down place for lunch.

The Educated Palate is a restaurant completely run by the students of City College San Francisco's Culinary Arts and Hospitality programs. The restaurant is open for lunch Monday-Fridays, but we chose to attend one of their Thursday night , fixed price, 3 course theme dinners. The night we went, the theme was "French Bistro" and it was wonderful! From the service, to the food, the the affordable prices of the dinner and wine, it was an elegant, delicious experience.
