“Great little hotel in a great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2013

I've come to find that Kimpton Hotels are always surprising - each one has a distinct feel and decor. The Hotel Monaco in San Francisco is in a great location just a few blocks (1-2 minute stroll) to Union Square, and has a delightful bright and colourful decor. Our room was a standard queen room, and while it had no view the room was clean and beautifully decorated in a whimsical style with bold colours. Room and bathroom are on the small side (which is why I'm giving 4 instead of 5), but sensibly laid out so as to maximise the space they do have. We had a room at the end of the corridor, quite far from the elevators, but it was very peaceful and quiet.

Bed was comfy, bathroom had nice C.O Bigelow products from NYC which was a nice touch, housekeeping service was excellent, our room was always fresh and tidy when we returned each day.

Staff were all very friendly and helpful, warm greeting, efficient check in and check out.

Close proximity to Union Square is a great bonus, plenty of cafes, shops, galleries and restaurants nearby. Great value for the quality and location, I would definitely stay here again.

Dear Fussy123,

I am feeling even more proud of this review given your screen name.

Whimsical is the exact word we use to describe our rooms. We think that means they are fun. We just spent a lot of money to have all of the rooms renovated and we are delighted to see such positive feedback. Thank you for noticing how we attempted to maximize your space with our choice of furniture and layout.

The team here is proud of the work they do and we want all of our guests to feel special. I am glad you were able to get a good sense of that during your stay. I am assuming you joined us for our hosted wine reception each evening and the coffee and tea receptions in the morning.

Please let us know when you are planning a return visit. We would love to ensure your next visit is just as memorable as your first.

Sincerely,
Jason Stone

Dear Anitve,

Thank you for saying we are one of the better hotels in San Francisco from your experience. That means a lot to us.

The Monaco hotels are definitely known for their whimsical and fun decoration. We have updated the pictures on our website to show you our newly renovated rooms. As you indicated, the design may not be for everyone, but that should not impact your overall experience.

We do have interior rooms, which are very quiet. Many of our suites face Geary Street and it seems that every person has a difference tolerance for the city noise. We can always provide you with earplugs or a fan, because we want to make sure you have a good night’s rest.

If you are planning on staying with us on a frequent basis, let us know and perhaps we can set up a special rate for you.

Sincerely,
Jason Stone

First impressions??? The day before I arrived, I received a personal email from the hotel counter person introducing herself and said she will most likely be there when I arrive.

I was actually in the hotel only one night. I wished I could have stayed longer. Eevery time I walked by the counter, the staff would say hello, and not a "I have to say hello because I have to," an actual hello and wanted to know how everything was going.

On top of all of that, the price is right. Not sure if they were having some special or something, but the room was about 40% less the the hotel a couple of doors down and just as nice.

Dear bsearched,

Wow. I loved your review headline. We work very hard to make all our guests feel special and it is always nice to receive feedback that we have done our job well.

I am happy to hear you found a special rate. The hotels in San Francisco are pretty full during the summer, so that is not always the case. An insider tip is that if you join our loyalty program, we will e-mail you with special offers and they are guaranteed to be the lowest rates we are offering for that period.

Now, we just need to get you to come back...

Sincerely,
Jason Stone

Overall the room was nice (good size), stayed in a Junior Suite. Asked for a crib to be in room when we arrived, it wasn't when we checked in but was brought up within minutes. It was not a crib, it was a pack and play, not suitable for an infant (it was set up for us which was nice). Baby slept in the bed with us instead (we brought a cuddle nest as back up), if this is not an option for guests traveling with a baby, this would have been a problem. Next the fridge did not work, it was swapped out within 10 minutes. Bed was soft and comfortable. Loved most of the decoration in the room but some things did not seem to match. Love the big windows. We did not hear any outside noise and we were on the 2nd floor. The a/c unit was annoying, you had to press it around 20 times (not exaggerating) to get it to move up or down in temperature.
The bathroom is one of my favorite things about this hotel, it is huge and has great bath products but the towels are too rough and should be nicer for a boutique hotel and for the price per room.
I always enjoy the free coffee and tea in the lobby in the morning and paper at the door. The free wine hour is wonderful!
Hotel staff (front desk and valet) are super friendly. We enjoying staying here even with the little problems. Location is fine, no need to worry, just know where you are going.

Dear UMgirl,

First of all, let me thank you for being a repeat guest. It is a huge compliment that you have chosen to stay with us more than once.

You are correct that we do not have cribs, but instead we offer Pack and Plays. Crib seems to be the generic term that everyone knows. I am sorry if that caused some confusion.

I am sorry to hear you had difficulty with the controls for your air conditioning. We have a project starting in a few weeks whereby all of the controls will be replaced with newer models. They should only require one touch to get the temperature up or down.

Our Mediterranean and Monte Carlo Suites definitely have bigger bathrooms and they also feature the Jacuzzi tub.

I am glad you were able to enjoy the coffee and tea reception in the morning and the wine reception in the evening. Those are both good ways to start and end your day. This summer we are adding some special touches to each of those receptions, so look out for them.

We look forward to you coming back to stay with us in the future. Do not hesitate to reach out to us with any requests you may have so we can perfect your next stay.

Sincerely,
Jason Stone

My wife and I stayed one night at Hotel Monaco in mid-May and very much enjoyed the experience. Although our room was not ready at check-in (we were early), they checked our bags and directed us to a few different lunch spots to try. Upon returning, they upgraded us to a suite. Common areas are very nice--ornate lobby with sitting area by a fireplace, on-site above average restaurant (with creative drink menu), etc.

The room was small, but typical for an in-city hotel, well decorated and clean. Location is great--walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown, and the Embarcadero. I would not hesitate for one minute to recommend the hotel. Kimpton has once again impressed.

Nice hotel in the heart of the city. Rooms were nicely decorated, reasonable size and had all the necessary in the room. The staff were friendly and accommodating without being over the top. Food was good although we preferred to go out and explore the city a bit. Very convenient to Union Square which is 5 min walk away.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with natural light some are quiet dark however upside is these ones are not on the Ma...

Dear Starlika,

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Hotel Monaco while you were in San Francisco. We do think we have an excellent location just 2.5 blocks west of Union Square (where all of the shopping is located). We are also incredibly close to the Powell Street Cable Car line and BART station.

San Francisco has some amazing dining options and it sounds like you were able to sample some including our own restaurant- The Grand Café.

Lastly, thank you for providing people with the room tip. The more information you can give us about your preferences, the more we can tailor your experience. We may not be able to match all of your requests, but we will do our best. So, do not hestiate to contact us before your arrival.

Sincerely,
Jason Stone

It's always a challenge finding a hotel that will accommodate your pet. But the Hotel Monaco, and the Kimpton hotels in general, allow any pet without any extra fees or restrictions. This was the major selling point, because nearby hotels would charge $50-100 extra for a pet policy and some would have 20 lb weight restrictions. Just one warning - if your pet doesn't like elevators, ask one of the employees to direct you to the stairs to your room. The hotel has quite a confusing maze of stairwells that may or may not lead to the floor you want.

We parked around the corner from the hotel at a parking garage for $32 a night. This was an easy way to save over the hotel's own valet for $52. This hotel is in the heart of the city and extremely easy to get around anywhere by foot or Muni.

I really liked the interior of the hotel - nice cozy lobby areas with big couches. There is also complimentary water all day, coffee/tea in the morning, and wine in the evening. The service equally matched the great decor - everyone from the bellman to the housekeepers were friendly and helpful.

Contrary to the reviewers who think this hotel is in a sketchy area, it's actually lively, full of great restaurants and bars, and has foot traffic almost 24/7. The occasional homeless person should not deter you away from this great hotel.

Another tip - join the InTouch membership for free to receive discounts, a $10 mini bar voucher, and free wifi when you get there! Such a nice freebie. The Hotel Monaco has won me over and is my favorite San Francisco hotel.
