“5 stars for the hotel, 2 stars for the neighborhood !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

Hotel amazing, really beautiful. The staff is most courteous that I had. They helped me a lot founding myself in the city and recommended activities and restaurants. My room was beautiful and very comfortable bed. I had the room 714, I was disappointed because my room was located next to the elevators and ice machine, but fortunately there was never any noise. Secondly disappointment, the view from the room, a brick wall. It was possible to see the image of the neighbor's TV
The location of the hotel Monaco is well, (20 minutes walking distance for shopping center and 20-25 minutes from the Moscone Center) except that the area is poor. Even the taxi driver who brought me there, told me not to go out at night. It is impossible to go there without being accosted by a homeless people.
It is possible to get a copy of your boarding pass.
I forgot to ask, but someone told me that it possible to ask for a pet ! and you get a little fish in your room :)

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view, The 714 has no view at all (a brick wall)

This is a lovely hotel just down the street from Union Square. The service is top notch and the staff are super. Ellen was super helpful at the front desk and she arranged for a quiet room. We asked for an in room coffeemaker and some forgotten toiletries and they were quickly brought to our room. Unlike concerns expressed in other reviews, the location is perfectly safe and there is everything that you would want steps from your door. Some of the best restaurants are in this area. Great hotel.

My husband and I have been to San Francisco many times and have always been disappointed by the so-called mega hotels. Most had small rooms and lousy service. So we didn't expect much when we had to return to the city for a conference. Wow, were we pleasantly surprised. This boutique hotel (only seven floors) is situated very close to Union Square so it is convenient to every area of town. The lobby is so inviting. A lovely large fireplace on one end and a living room off to the side where they serve complimentary wine in the PM and coffee in the AM. The whole hotel has such a warm, cozy feeling. More like being at home rather than a hotel. The service was exceptional. The front desk personnel and the concierge couldn't do enough for us from arranging restaurant reservations to car services. Even service personnel we encountered in the elevators had a pleasant attitude--always wishing us a good day etc. The room was quiet, very clean and had some of the best beds I ever slept in. Bathroom was large and comfortable. My only complaint is that the closet space was small and the room only had a dresser with two drawers. Ok for one person, but cramped for two. While I don't usually offer tourist advice, if you are planning a trip to SF you must do one thing: see the newly lighted Bay Bridge. It is a remarkable sight. Bravo to whoever engineered this lighting display. There are many areas of the city where you can get an incredible view of this bridge at night. Worth the cab ride. When we return to SF, we will definitely stay at the Monaco. It's a real find.

Room Tip: Stay on the top floor. No street noise.

The rooms are small-ish but comfortable, and the quirky decorations are fun. The staff are AAA+ --- friendly, helpful, and going the extra mile to help us out with room type & location. No coffee in the room, but available from 5 AM downstairs was a-ok. Maybe the best was a stack of NY Times (and SF Chronicle and Wall Street Journal) in the lobby each morning. Thank-you!!

Unlike some past reviews, we found the location to be just fine. It's downtown SF, a couple blocks from Union Square; there are poor people (and homeless people) there. Some might speak to you. Some might ask for a quarter or a dollar, or even try to sell you a newspaper. We experienced no harassment, though, and found the location convenient and vibrant.

I'd definitely stay here again.

This was a nice hotel- My boyfriend and I found staff helpful, particularly the concierge at the front desk who was able to recommend some fantastic restaurants. It is a big hotel but I found we got better service here than at other large hotel chains we have stayed in in San Francisco.

The rooms are also very nice although a bit on the smaller size, but they had a very quirky feel.

There is a wine hour in the evenings which was a nice touch.

My only complaint is the location. There were a lot of homeless people on the streets outside the hotel as it borders on the Tenderloin district (although there are plenty of hotels in this same area). It did feel unpleasant walking the streets at night and we were harrassed by a few of the homeless people. They do have personnel outside the front of the hotel but there is not much they can do about the area. And there were heaps of hotels in this same area so I am sure they all experience the same issue.

We stayed here in September (summer in San Francisco). Hotel is nice and clean, room are well presented and good bathroom. Coffee served in the lobby each morning was appreciated and the managers drinks were fun after a busy day exploring.

This is a busy hotel, completely understand that but the front reception staff made you feel like a number passing through nothing more.

The location is fantastic for shopping etc. As previous reviewers point out be careful after dark - same as you would be in any major city.

Loved SF, will definitely return probably would stay in this hotel again, unless our budget suddenly stretched to The Cliff across the road....now THAT is an amazing hotel.

My daughter and I stayed here four nights and would highly recommend it. Our room was beautifully decorated, the beds very comfy and the bathroom luxurious. The service was friendly as well. The location is close to Union Square with plenty of good restaurants close by. There are two large lounge type rooms with a fireplace and comfortable seating, where tea and coffee were available mornings and wine and nibbles between 5 and 6 pm - free of charge. The price was very reasonable. Internet access is approx $12.00 per day, so we used the free wi-fi at the Starbucks across the street (not sure if this is typical for San Francisco).
