“Nice hotel, scary neighborhood”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013

I stayed here over a weekend between two business trips, and had I known what the neighborhood is like, I would have gone somewhere else. The hotel itself is lovely: attractive (albeit a little quirky) décor, clean and well maintained sleeping rooms, kind and helpful staff, complimentary coffee, hot chocolate and wine, free wifi, and an excellent restaurant with speedy room service. The safety and comfort of the hotel is in direct contrast to the surrounding area, which has more drugged-out crazies per square foot than I have seen since Mayor Bloomberg cleaned up New York. I would also strongly advise skipping the depressing, dark basement spa.

It is located in the heart of the city (near Union Square), rooms are nice, clean and attractive and personell is very friendly! Coffee in the morning and wine in the evening are nice extras, but the very best thing is that you can get a bicycle for free! You should not miss the ride through the park and over the bridge while you stay there! It is pleasant to stay at this hotel!

This is an absolutely beautiful boutique hotel with excellent and friendly staff and complimentary extras that add to the enjoyment of guests - an evening wine hour, newspapers and coffee/tea in the morning, with even more thoughtful extras (free wifi and a minibar credit) for guests who are a member of the Kimpton rewards program. Another wonderful bonus - the hotel has loaner bikes for those wishing to explore the city on two wheels. Our Queen room was not large, as is often the case in a city, but we certainly didn't feel cramped, the bathroom was roomy and the decor and finishes were bright, fun and of high quality. The bed was very comfortable and outfitted in luxurious feeling linens. We had no issues with hearing any sounds outside the room, although our location on the inside (non-street side) of the hotel on an upper floor certainly gave us an advantage in that aspect. The entire hotel seemed very clean and well kept and is full of art, plants and lovely sitting areas. The adjoining bar and restaurant were gorgeous and inviting looking. Breakfast in the restaurant was just average, although service was friendly and attentive. Valet parking was very expensive, although if you use a parking locating ap on your smart phone you will find various options within a few block radius. We paid less than half the price at a garage four blocks north of the hotel. This would not be an attractive option, however, if you were hauling heavy or large luggage. Be forewarned that the Union Square area (as well as other parts of the city), while generally safe and with many activities, shopping, sightseeing and dining options, does have a variety and abundance of disenfranchised and hardcore homeless people living and sleeping on the streets, a heartbreaking problem that seems to increase each year. The beautiful Hotel Monaco certainly provides a welcoming and comfortable oasis for the guests who temporarily make their home there.

Room Tip: If you are concerned about potential noise ask for an inside room on an upper floor.

Loved this stay, walked to the Ferry Building for lunch at the Slanted Door. First time in San Francisco, and needed somewhere central. Better than average gym and spa and sauna room were great. Wine hour in the afternoon a lovely idea.

I recently stayed at Hotel Monaco with girlfriends. It was perfectly located near great restaurants and shopping. The valet service was great. Check in with Jaime was great, he made sure we had a great room. Rooms are small in SF due to the old buildings, however, we had a suite which made a big difference. They have a nice complimentary wine hour in the afternoon which is great after a day of shopping. Highly recommend this nice boutique hotel

Good location and friendly staff. I called down to the front desk late night and was quickly taken care of.

The room was small it is San Francisco. The walls are thin so bring your earplugs if you are there on the weekend.

Valet is pricey but there are plenty of other parking garages for cheaper right around the block.

We've stayed at the Hotel Monaco twice now. It really is a gorgeous boutique hotel, very well-appointed, and quite romantic with excellent service. It's almost what I would call an excellent hotel except the room service doesn't quite work, nor is the food at the adjacent restaurant very good. By San Francisco standards, the food there is generic and overpriced. Also, the parking is an absolute fortune. And honestly, the rooms are small and the bathroom is a bit "meh." But the hotel has something to it, a uniqueness, a beauty, a sort of charm, and it's competitively priced for the area. If you don't care about room service and have no qualms about paying $50 a night for parking, I would say go for it. It's very romantic and atmospheric inside of the rooms themselves, and the smallness might be to their advantage if you're looking for intimacy. There's a fabulous Jewish deli across the street that does very, very good breakfast. I don't particularly like the Union Square area of San Francisco, but it's admittedly very central to everything and a popular tourist spot otherwise, one of the easier places to get public transportation if you're visiting. Also, the Monaco is pet-friendly.
