On the cusp of Chinatown. Handy to have the basic breakfast in the morning and wireless in the common room but very basic and owners were a fairly ratty bunch. Average location but fairly close to most of SF's amenities.

I've previously reviewed the Astoria Hotel and have nothing particular to add from my recent trip other than to say they offer the same basic, safe, stupendously well-located hotel as they always have and at a mind-blowing price that hasn't changed in years.

If you're looking at $300/night hotels then the Astoria isn't for you but if you want to pay $65/night and be better located than almost anywhere then do it. Do it now.

Room Tip: Personally we always ask for a room over-looking the street as we like seeing (and hearing) the hust...

Great location right next door to the entrance of San Francisco's Chinatown. The place is a bit dingy and slightly run down, but overall it's very clean and no-frills. The rooms are small and the bed is stiff, but overall very clean. Very basic, budget hotel. This is the place for you if you're just looking for a place to sleep at night and don't want to spend a lot of money...because that's all you'll get. A roof, a toilet, a shower, and a bed. Good if that's what you're looking for.

Good price, great location. The Astoria was better than some of of the reviews. The staff was great, large room for wifi (second floor). Room 402 was like a room in downtown London, very small. The bathroom was also very small but this was okay for a single traveler. Small breakfast that came with the room price (65) a night. The breakfast room, on second floor, opened at 8 am on weekdays, making it difficult to use on departure day. Very small tv with a remote that did not turn on the tv. Few channels but reception was good.
I had previously stayed at the Baldwin Hotel, which is a half block away. Last year I came in the spring and the cost was $69 a night. The Baldwin is a better place to stay but in August the best price I could get was $135 a night. Therefore, the Astoria was a much better deal. Both hotels are old but the Baldwin was better maintained. Both were located close to Bart for transportation and at the entrance to Chinatown. I felt that this was a safe location (for both).

We expected a lot more noise, we expected a much older building, and we expected a lot scarier of a stay, but for the price (<$100/night), we got a suite on the 7th floor. The bathroom was old, but functional. The room was clean, but a little musty. They reimbursed me for the febreeze I purchased. Small tv, big bed, mini fridge, room safe didn't work.

The only thing was the breakfast service person was really crusty. I accidentally took orange juice from the fridge and she literally yanked it out of my hand and yelled "don't touch this!" and put it back in the fridge. I just stood there until she turned back around and pointed to the orange juice on the table. Breakfast was decent for being free: bagels, cream cheese, hard boiled eggs.

Location is absolutely amazing... literally two doors down from the Chinatown gate, four blocks from Union Square, directly across the street from Starbucks, two minutes from Lululemon. If you're coming as a tourist, you don't need a fancy hotel room anyway. For the price, this was definitely worth it.

I rad some reviews on this hotel before I booked and it seemed to be a fairly even split with some people saying good and some bad, so i thought I would give it a try seeing as it had a great central location for the price. I now wish I had paid the extra to stay elsewhere! Triton across the street was $200.00 extra for three nights, should have gone for that!
As soon as we walked into the hotel we all reallised that the Lobby smelled of a musty urine smell, we thought this may be coming from outside drains so didnt think too much of it.
We entered the lift which was extremely old and rickety, only three people to ride at a time, it only just made it to th fourth floor with our luggage!
When exiting the lift we realised the upper floors also smelled of urine including our room.
The door to our room just didnt feel secure and at night the corridor lighting shone through the gaps around the frame!
There is no air con in the room so be aware if you need it to be cool in your room while you sleep you wil have to leave your windows open and the streets below are incredibly noisy.
The room looked like it had not been cleaned for a very long time, the sheets seemed to be clean but we had stains on our towels, dirt on windowsills, bath, sink, sideboard, carpet ( chewing gum!) filthy blinds. We actually cleaned our room ourselves with cleaning materials and air fresheners from the CVS on Market.
The Hotel does offer discounted parking but not at the car park right across the street?
Not many TV channels or screens over the windows, we were bitten many times by mosquito's.

If you are looking for a San Fran hotel on a budget dont make the same mistake as us by staying at the Astoria, pay a little extra and stay somewhere else, it didnt spoil our San Fran stay but certainly didnt add to it!

Photo,s to follow.

The hotel is located right next to the Chinatown gate, very close to Union Square. Taking this into account the price was good, but the staff was rude.
There's wifi but not in the room. Breakfast was included but was quite bad.
