“Great Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2013

This hotel is a very nice place to stay while you are in San Francisco. Location is great, as it is not located right by the Union Square, which places it away from all the hustle and bustle and noise of the streets as well as, while at the same time it is a ten minute walk to get downtown. From its location pretty much everything within reach for sightseeing, walked to china Town, North Beach, Union Square, Hayes Valley. The rooms were clean and tidy, bedding was changed every day as well as bathroom was always clean. Wifi was in every room as well as a tv with enough channels if you wanted to watch anything. The decor of the hotel is very unique, in a white and orange theme, which was a nice change from the stadard-looking rooms in other hotels. The front lobby of the hotel does look a bit dated, but it is an old building, and the nice decor of it makes up for it. The front staff in the morning are very friendly and helpful, whereas the ones in the evening while just as helpful, were less friendly and enthusiastic. On one of the nights we could hear people in the room next to us talking, so we just turned the tv up a bit, but for the rest of the time everything was quiet. Overall, this is a very good hotel to stay at, very good location, good price, would definitely stay here again!!!

I recently stayed at Hotel Vertigo and absolutely loved it!
Good size room, comfy bed, huge walk in shower, clean, brilliant location!
Just around the corner from Union Square.
Cable car ride to Fishermans Wharf is $6 - you can catch in Union Square (Powell Street).
Muni ride to Fishermans Wharf is $2 - 5 min walk to the Muni stop.
The front desk staff were very helpful - they give you a map of the city when you check in and are more than happy to help point out attractions and tell you how to get there.
I have no faults to this hotel at all! All staff were lovely, rooms were very clean and modern, great loction - what more could you ask for!?

We arrived here after travelling for nearly 24 hours so the king size bed was more than welcome, we were on the 5th floor so our room was very quiet. Nice clean room with a good bathroom.
The hotel is well positioned for all the attractions such as Union Sq, Chinatown and Pier 39.
A computor and a printer are available in reception.
Would not hesitate to recomend this hotel as a base to explore San Francisco,
The Staff on reception were always smiling and helpfull.

Room Tip: Get a room higher up as the road outside can be a little noisy at times.

The hotel is in a great location to get around San Francisco, neighbourhood was very safe at night, service was great, wifi in all rooms, complimentary tea/coffee in lobby in the morning and wine at 5.30pm every night, nice touch. We had a room at the back of the hotel with no view but it was so quiet and very comfy bed. Would recommend this hotel to anyone, bus route comes up this street, 10-15mins walk to Union sq/cable car on powell street. There are some hills surrounding this hotel so may not be suitable for people who are older.

Top tip: Don't stand at the first stop for the cable car, go up a block and you won't need to queue.

Pros:
This hotel is in a great location. It is well within walking distance to Union Square, Powell Station, Chinatown, public transportation, cable cars, etc. It is on a quiet street which means you don't hear any city noise while trying to sleep (see Con for why this matters).

Cons:
This hotel has no A/C. Yes, that is correct. No air conditioning. Maybe that is ok in SF in general, but it was 80F degrees while we were there which meant our room on the 6th floor was a million degrees. The small ceiling fan and open window were of no help. The window opened fully, which was nice, but it opened to other buildings which meant no air flow.

The hotel has been "remodeled" but it looks like they just painted with "modern" colors and added some new, mod furniture. The quality of the tilework in the bathroom is no better than my own ability to tile (as a novice DIY tiler, read: uneven tiles, grout missing between tiles, looks like a DIY project) and the carpets were old/gross. Overall, impressive in the way lipstick on a pig is impressive.

I stay 20+ nights a year in hotels so I believe I've seen my fair share of staff. The staff here was incredibly inconsistent. One set of staff treated me like I was a child with their condescending tone, another set was among the best I've ever encountered.

In short:
Maybe it's just the way the SF hotel market is, but I have no idea why this hotel would be over $400/night (once done with taxes and $35 parking fee).

Dear amdandrea,

Thank you for sharing your feedback and for your contribution to the Trip Advisor community.
I’m disappointed to hear that your stay fell short of your expectations. due to no air conditioning, the uneven tiles in the bathroom and the old carpet.

The Hotel Vertigo is an older boutique building that when coupled with our cool pleasant weather year round permits us to only provide heating units in each room but in rare cases can provide oscillating fans. I do apologize that you found the bathroom tiles uneven and that you found your carpet to be old. I would highly appreciate it if you could reach out to me and provide me with the room number so that I may investigate and resolve these issues.

We hope that if your travels lead you back to San Francisco you would give us another opportunity to exceed your expectations.

I was a bit worried at first about staying here because some reviews on Tripadvisor included unfavourable comments about the street noise. I needn't have worried because the hotel is very quiet -- I don't know what the other guests were complaining about. We stayed for 5 nights and, in fact, it's one of the quietist hotels we've ever stayed in! And it's so central! It's just a few blocks walk from Union Square which was the hub for all our touring around the city. Fortunately the blocks in San Fran are quite small (tiny when compared to Washington DC).

The decor in both the lobby and the rooms is captivating. The Hitchcock movie of the same name is played on a constant loop behind the counter in the lobby. The swirling mirror in our room was consistent with the "vertigo" theme. It was all quite novel.

The staff were polite and helpful, with the exception of one concierge who didn't have the vocabulary or patience to properly explain how the shower in our room worked. The word she was looking for was "fawcet", not handle or tap. This created some confusion and exasperation on both sides of the counter. I returned to my room none the wiser but fortunately worked it out through trial and error myself a second time around. If hotels are going to employ migrant people presumably at low wages, as I hear is common in the US (the basic wage being outrageously low in that country), they need to make sure their staff have a better grasp of basic English. That especially applies to the features and amenities of the hotel they are working in.

The bed was extremely comfortable. We slept very well with the ceiling fan on low.

The hotel doesn't offer breakfast, but there is a cafe with a relaxing ambience directly across the road which we heartily recommend. It's called Jin's Cozy Cafe. We had breakfast there every morning and met some friendly locals.

On the whole we enjoyed our stay here and if we ever came back to San Fran would do so again.

Dear Bernard C,

Thank you for staying with us at Hotel Vertigo. We appreciate you taking a moment to leave us your review. We are definitely happy to hear that you had such a pleasant stay and the unfavorable comments about the street noise was a motive for you not to be a guest of ours during your visit in San Francisco.
