We were in San Francisco with our 2 boys and wanted a place that was pretty central, clean and safe. Hotel Vertigo ticked all the boxes. It is 15 mins walk from Union Square, 5 minutes from the cable car, and 2 buses ply Sutter St, so very accessible. The free coffee in the morning, and free wine in the evening was a great touch, as was the fact there is a coin operated laundry, 3 different food joints (pizza, gelati and sandwiches, roast chicken), a bottle shop, and a supermarket within 20 ft of the front door. Also a very decent Italian, 30 meters dwn the road (ask the reception). Only dwnside was the room, which was relatively small but meticulously clean, with 2 queen sized beds. Saw 5 differenct front desk staff in our 4 nights there, have to say all except 1 werent very friendly. They werent surly or rude, just didnt even bother to say hello, or ask us how our day was etc. Basically just looked busy, even though there was no one else around. Everyone else we met anywhere in the hospitality business in the US was super friendly, so this struck me as being a bit odd.

We liked the feel of the Hotel Vertigo and its embracing of its movie star history in its cool, 1950s styling. The hotel is old and the bathrooms are not especially modern but the rooms are sufficiently spacious & comfortable and the environment of the hotel was distinctive and appealing. We would stay here again

I got this room at a great price in San Francisco. Moral of the story: You get what you pay for. The hotel is f-u-n-k-y. The lobby, elevator, staircase, and hallways are all a little worse for the wear. Like duct tape holding a few things together, and lots of stains here and there. So was the bathroom in my room. The paint was peeling up from my tub. Never a pretty sight. And the curtains looked like someone had hurled entire pots of coffee on them repeatedly. Yuck!
But here's the glass half full: My room was large and quiet. It looked out over a garden at the back of the hotel, and I slept like a baby, hearing no street noise at all. The bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean. Thank goodness! And the staff was very friendly about letting me out of my reservation when I was able to move to a nicer hotel after two nights.
For someone who is not a cleanliness nut, which unfortunately I am, this hotel has a fun style and is in a relatively good location (one direction takes you to Union Square, other straight into the Tenderloin), and is well priced. But if you expect clean, pick another hotel.

We stayed here for 2 nights and were quite disappointed as we had high expectations from seeing the beautiful photos from their website. The room was nice, but we heard our next door neighbor as if they were right in the room with us. We also happened to be assigned the room right beside the only elevator in the hotel, so we didn't get any sleep between the noise of all the other guests going up and down the elevator, plus chatting and the sound of the TV from our neighbors. We had the room changed the following day, and I was quite annoyed that they gave us that room in the first place when they weren't fully booked. Those rooms beside the elevator shouldn't be guest rooms. If you're going to charge people, get thicker walls!

Room Tip: Ask them for another room if they give you a room that ends in '08' as this is right next to...

Dear TammyE22,

I am sorry to hear that your stay was not as enjoyable as you would have liked. We do plan to take care of the noise issues you experienced during your stay and are currently looking at some insulation features to reduce noise pollution. We hope you give us another chance sometime in the future if your travels lead you back to San Francisco.

Staying in a hotel or an apartment in a capital city can be a bland experience as it is hard to tell on hotel room from another, this is not the case at Hotel Vertigo, it has a style all of its own, the rooms have a different feel and the hotel corridors have a “feel” to them that lets you know that this building was not thrown up last year.
The Wi-Fi is fast works well, the staff on check in and check out were quick and attentive. The room was clean, quiet and different, I enjoyed the experience of waking up somewhere unique and knowing that I was in the hotel that Hitchcock used to shoot Hotel Vertigo just added to the experience.
It is located close to the centre and I was able to walk everywhere I want to go.
I will return

Room was good, shower was nice, staff was excellent. Love the Hitchcockian decor. Easy access to Union, cable cars, bus stops, etc. There are a couple organic/sustainable restaurants within walking distance: Roots Restaurant located in the Orchard Garden Hotel on Bush Street & Millenium Restaurant on Geary Street (very close by, but call ahead for reservations). We highly recommend them both.

I really liked this hotel and the nice little features in the room. Also, it has a decent gym and the location is also good, maybe 15min walk to Union Square. On the other side, if you are in the wrong room, you can hear your neighbours talking. Even though, the hotel wasn't booked out and they had plenty of rooms available, they put us in the room next to the elevator. During that night, I didn't sleep more than 30 min. After complaining, they gave us a different room which was much better. But why not giving us a quiet room in the first place!?

Room Tip: As far away from the elevator as possible
