When checking in, they just threw the keys at us without explaining a single thing (where the room was, what services they have, etc.). Then, they refused to honour the booking with TWO beds, so we had to share one unless we paid a higher fee (even though we had booked a room with two beds). We had planned to book a tour but waited until we were there because the hotel boasted "expert" concierge service... The concierge was rude, but also useless (insisted that the ferry to Alcatraz left from Pier 1 even though our tickets said Pier 33 - and sure enough, it was Pier 33! glad we didn't listen or we would have missed our tour). The concierge also only suggested tours that he received a commission from, NOT tours that included the sights we wanted to see (so we booked our own tour online from our hotel room because he refused to help us). We also asked him where the closest grocery store was, and he couldn't explain where it was and didn't know the name (turns out it's almost directly across the street from the hotel and easy to see from the front entrance! not sure why he didn't mention that part). One last thing about the concierge (we could go on all day about how useless he was!) - we had to go out into the street to hail our own cab because he wouldn't call one because he arbitrarily decided that it might take up to two hours to get one to the hotel!!! (despite the fact that we called one the morning before and it arrived before we even made it downstairs).
We had the housekeeping staff empty our in-room mini bar so that we could stock the fridge with our own items, but upon arriving back at home (NOT mentioned at the time of check out), we arrived to find that they had charged us for every item removed from the mini-bar! Apparently they forgot that they were the ones that removed everything for us specifically so that we wouldn't be charged. We called to have the charge reversed, but the woman in accounting was extremely patronizing and said she would look into it and call me back the next day... she never called back. I was only able to receive the credit by disputing the charge with Visa.
Also, for the room, there was a huge, loud fan right outside our room (and our "view" from the room looked directly into the room with this fan) so that kept us up all night.
The hotel in general is very old and outdated. Most of the staff are extremely rude (we did encounter ONE very nice staff person, but unfortunately it was the morning we left!).
All in all, unfortunately NOT a good hotel to stay at. Yes, the location was convenient, but not worth the trouble that the staff caused for us (there seemed to be a new "issue" come up from them every day!). You could definitely find a better hotel for the same price.

When I checked in the person at the front desk sent me to two rooms which had not been cleaned and then the third room was still being cleaned when I entered. I was unable to connect to wifi on my mac laptop. When asked to use the phone in the lobby, since I was forced to go there to use my computer, the so called concierge yelled at me and refused to let me use the phone to make a dinner reservation. The staff was very rude and seemed like it was the entire staff's first day on the job. The hotel was very clean and nice and reasonably priced, but the rude staff and general incoveniences really put me off and no I would not recommend anyone to stay here with so many similar hotels in the city.

I went to San Francisco for a conference with colleagues and we chose this hotel based on price and location. It was the cheapest we could find in a safe part of town and it was close to the conference hotel. Unfortunately, the rooms were tiny, there were no dressers, the TV had very few stations, and the wireless internet was terrible (despite the fact that free wireless internet was advertised).

The service was alright. Though we had checked in with 3 people, the cleaning ladies consistently left only two towels in our room forcing us to call every day asking for more. They also often forgot to leave cups for coffee and we had to ask for extra hangers multiple times. However, every time we called the front desk for something, service was at our door within 5 minutes.

The hotel did have complimentary wine hour every night, which was lots of fun! The staff were friendly and the hotel is in a prime location.

Overall, if they could guarantee the wireless internet was better/stronger, I would stay here again. Without the internet, however, it makes for a very difficult week if you need to keep on top of email for work.

We have stayed here over about 15 or so years. It still amazes me when we come once a year or thereabouts that there are the same people working the desk and the concierge stand! One has been there since 1985, another for 15 years, another 12 years, and on it goes. And they do remember us as amazing as that can be nowdays. Nice rooms. Clean. Quiet. All non-smoking. They give you umbrellas when it rains. They have a great WINE TASTING DAILY from 5-6pm. All included. And the world famous Masa's Restaurant is just 10 feet away. Located on Bush street just up the hill on Powell from Union Square, you can fly into Oakland, catch Air Bart, get off on Powell and walk up the hill with your bag in tow and be there in 10 minutes or so. Couldn't be better. Stay here and you will see what I mean about the difference between college kids just filling space, and professional hoteliers who know their stuff. For dinner, try Plouf just a few short blocks away. Ask them how to get there.

My husband and I visited San Francisco for the weekend to relax and celebrate our anniversary. This hotel ranked up there with the hooker hotel we stayed in Seattle one time. Looks are deceiving, the lobby was really beautiful, but the rooms sucked. The first room they stuck us in was right across from the elevator, so we told them we wanted to move & then they stuck us in a different room. The 2nd room stunk like a cross between dirty feet & dirty dog. The comforter was so disgusting looking that I refused to sleep with it. I slept fully clothed in the bed & then the heat consisted of a baseboard heater that was about 2 feet long. We nearly froze to death in the room. You could see your breath after you go out of the shower. The water in the shower didn't even warm you up enough to offset the freezingness of the room. Then because the windows & walls are so paper thin you could hear every noise outside, sirens, dogs barking, etc. I did not sleep a wink. Lastly, the toilet had fecal matter on the seat that I had to clean off myself due to had to go the bathroom really bad & didn't want to wait for the staff to come clean it for me. I can not believe that any place would recommend this hotel or even give it a good rating. It is 1 star at best if even that.

I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and loved it. The staff on the desk were very helpful and welcoming. The hotel is located close to Union square and Chinatown so it's great for sightseeing in SF. The room was very clean, spacious and with free high speed wi-fi. I was sorry to leave and would definitely return.
