The entrance to the hotel is a little hidden, we walked right by it until we looked up and saw the sign at the top.
Like what many reviewers have mentioned, the location is centrally located on Powell street right in front of the cable car line and near the BART.
Opposite of the hotel is Uniqlo and a Walgreens, at the corner of the street is H & M.

We booked a Deluxe room and had the option of a courtyard facing room or a street facing room. We picked the street facing room for a direct view of the Uniqlo bright lights and the cable cars moving below on the street. We had a room on the 3rd floor and didn't have trouble sleeping at night although during the day, the room can get a little noisy if there's loud honking on the street. The bells of the cable cars can be heard too. Good place to people watch if that's your thing.

The conceirge was helpful with food and tour recommendations. The front desk staff too were friendly and helpful.

Overall, I liked the general ambiance of the hotel (there were art pieces scattered around the hallways). Yes, the hallways were a bit dark but it fits in with their concept, the hotel is well decorated I would definitely stay here again.

We were very pleased with the Hotel Union Square. The beds were so comfortable, staff was great, location fabulous, and overall a very nice place to stay. The cable care turn about is 1 block down that takes you to the Wharf, Lombard Street, Cable Care Museum, and Top of the Mark. The Union Square area is busy area that has lots of shopping. Great area and place to stay.

We highly recommend it!

The hotel is right on Powell Street, centrally located to a lot of large department stores. The cable cars go right by, so it is very easy to get to your San Francisco destination for the day. The BART is about .3 miles away. Our room was very clean, the bed was comfortable. There was a large closet, a safe in the room, and free wifi. The shower was like a gentle rain. There was a happy hour with red or white wine and a acoustic guitar player who was excellent. The was coffee in the room and also in the lobby. The staff was vey helpful and vey professional.

If you want to be right on the cable car line and close to the Bart, this is the hotel for you. We paid for a deluxe room so the complaints that other guests have about the room were not ours. Our room was very quiet and the bed was very comfortable. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable.
Now for the negatives: The bathroom did not have enough shelf space. The hotel does not have a restaurant so breakfast was not included. The lobby is uninviting. Because this is the area most frequented by tourists, it is also full of beggars and people with some mental disorder. It was worrying at times when we saw people becoming agitated and violent right outside the hotel. This is not a problem which the hotel is responsible for, but did effect our experience.

Dear LetsgoOttawa,

I am sorry that your stay did not completely meet your expectations. It is true that Downtown San Francisco can be overwhelming at times, but rest assured the city is taking security seriously. Thank you for letting us know.
I am glad that the staff was able to help you and give you the information you needed and that you found the room comfortable.

Best regards,

My boyfriend and I stayed here 2 nights and stayed in a standard queen room. The room was clean, but very small and we had to rearrange some furniture to fit in both our suitcases. The sink is outside of the bathroom which just grosses me out to think of all the people who touch the doorknob without washing their hands. Wireless was painfully slow and I usually gave up and went to the lobby for quicker access. The concierge gave brilliant recommendations for dinner and really spent his time sharing his screen to show me menu options and giving me his favourites. We went to one of his favourites and the meal was so amazing it made up for most of my earlier complaints. The location is great for being close to shopping during the day, but if you like good food and nightlife you need to cab elsewhere, but cabs in San Francisco are pretty affordable so we didn't mind. They also have complimentary wine at happy hour with acoustic accompaniment which was much appreciated

Dear Travelbudget2009,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on Trip Advisor. Hotel Union Square has a wide range of room types. If you were looking for a roomier accommodation an Executive King or a Junior Suite might have met your expectations. Thanks for the kind words about the concierge. We hope that you will consider giving us another try next time you stay in San Francisco.

Best regards

The hotel is in a fantastic location. Easy walking distance to transport, restaurants and shops. Although we were disappointed with our room, we would stay at this hotel again due to the other qualities it offers.

Centrally located right on one of the main cable car lines the hotel needs work. The staff were very helpful, especially the concierge. There just wasn't much character to the room provided, the bed was comfortable, the room was quiet...that's it. The lobby is dark and very cramped.

Room Tip: Ask them for one of the rooms shown on their web site.
