“Honeymoon Stay”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

We travelled to San Fran on our honeymoon in April, this hotel was booked by our Travel agent here in Ireland for us and I was excited when I saw the website and their Facebook page as the hotel looked very different, trendy and cool.
We arrived from the airport on the BART and got off Powell St.Station, which was just a few blocks from Union Square. We arrived bang in the midde of Chinese New year so there were alot of diversions and we ended up walking a little out of our way to get to the Triton. It looks exactly like it does on the website. I had emailed the hotel prior to arrival and informed them it was our honeymoon and if they could look after us with a nice room, I received a lovely email from Ross and Scott informing me that they would set us up with a nice upgrade to one of their corner Premier King rooms with a downtown city view. When we checked in and got to our room there was a lovely suprise waiting for us, a bottle of bubbly and a lovely card signed by the hotel staff for our honeymoon, such a nice touch. Our room was spacious the bathroom a little small with the sink in the room rather that the bathroom but it all added to the funkeness of the place. The housekeeping staff would leave us a little treat every day and it all felt so personal. The hotel is only a few blocks from Union Square and just across the street to chinatown, Breakfast was delivered each morning to us which consisted of a pack for each of us with a muffin, an apple, a cereal bar, a bottle of water and a bottle of juice, it was a perfect way to start the day. Some nice restaurants in the area and starbucks just across the streer, perfect location overall. We took the sight seeing bus tour one day, we got the tickets at the reception desk and the bus picks up right outside the hotel door!! Thanks you to all for a lovely stay and for making our honeymoon so special for us.

Great hotel in perfect central location. Wonderful eccentric decor and free drinks from 5 to 6 each evening where you can chat to over guests if you want - we did! Staff were very helpful and we soon realised, after studying the city map, that the Mustang had to go in favour of using the wonderful traditional cable cars. The hotel is sandwiched between China Town and the downtown shops and Union Square. The atmosphere in the hotel is lively and feels as if there is always a party going on but our bedroom was very quiet and comfortable.

Room Tip: Our room was on the back of the top floor and was very quiet.

We very much enjoyed our stay at this hotel - good location in the city (easy to get to from Montgomery St. BART station), extremely friendly service and interesting decor. The wine reception each day from 5-6pm is a laugh and a nice way to begin the evening. The staff were always available and keen to offer recommendations. The A/C units are quite noisy but the room was a comfortable temperature without it. We would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

I booked this hotel for my boyfriend's 30th birthday because I thought he would appreciate someplace a little different and fun. I searched for hours to find a hotel that would live up to the expectations and I spent more than I would normally spend because I wanted somewhere special. I have stayed in other Kimpton hotels and have not been disappointed. Ultimately, Hotel Triton was good, but not quite the special experience I had hoped for. I guess I was maybe expecting too much but I really did think the room would be nicer than it actually was.

The good:
-funky room with Jack Kerouac wallpaper
-awesome lobby and nice art elsewhere in the building
-wine reception
-friendly staff
-a chalkboard in the room

The not-so-good:
-not super clean (dusty underneath bedside table and toothpaste splatters on faucet)
-tiny room, felt cramped
-shower was broken (only pointed down, not out, very annoying)
-horrible view out the window (all we could see were some heating vents or something and the other side of the building)
-not the most comfortable bed

A lovely staff member did leave us complimentary beer and snacks as an apology for the issues we had, but since we only stayed one night and didn't get back to our hotel until very late we weren't able to enjoy them. Still, it was a very nice gesture and bumped what would have been a 3-star rating up to a 4-star rating.

Room Tip: If you care about a nice view, ask about that when checking in.

We went to San Francisco for my 40th birthday, and we definitely picked the best hotel to stay at. The whole stay was just perfect. We were upgraded to the Haagen Dazs suite when we checked in and there was a bottle of champagne, a cupcake and some jelly beans for me, along with a card, what a touch. From check in to check out the service was amazing. Tawny on reception was brilliant, she gave us advice as to where to go and eat when we arrived, and the whole time we were there Tawny was a great help. The wine hour in the evening is interesting, you end up talking to the other guests, something that doesn't happen too often in most hotels. The location was brilliant, we were there for St Patrick's day, so the bar next door, the Irish bank, was absolutely packed and bouncing, not too far to stumble back from. Chinatown is just steps away, and its an easy walk to north beach and pier 39. I cannot fault this hotel at all, it was just a brilliant choice, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone going to San Francisco, I really want to go back myself sometime!

Room Tip: The Haagen Dazs suite is just what you want if you want unlimited Ice Cream, there a little freezer...

Spanning the last 9 years this was our 6th stay and 30th night total at the Triton. Our first time was on my 50th birthday and the latest stay was for my 59th. Every visit to the Triton has been a wonderful experience. This time we stayed in a premium king room which was a corner room that overlooked the gate into Chinatown. The room was larger than the regular queen and king rooms we've stayed in the past. However, we don't spend a lot of time in our room when we are visiting San Francisco so the room size had never been an issue for us. You will not find a more accommodating hotel staff any where. Whether it was the front desk staff, room attendants, or supervisors, the word "no" or "I can't"--well, we never heard it. As a matter of fact, I heard a front desk staff tell a visitor that if they couldn't find the restaurant to come back and she would personally walk them there. The Kimpton staff went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was pleasant and our requests were fulfilled. The room was clean and the bedding and bath linen were top quality. The bed was comfortable, the room was recently renovated (with wall paper of Jack Kerouac's prose), and every thing in the room worked as it should. The lobby (or living room as it's referred to) is quite a treat. You will not find many hotel lobbies that garner as much quizzical attention as at the Triton. People walking by will stop, stare, and/or pop in for a look. The wine reception from 5 to 6 is a great time to meet fellow travelers also staying at the hotel. The location, for us, is the best - at the China Gate. We use public transportation as much as possible and it's easy to get to North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf, BART/Muni, cable cars (the California line is just 2 blocks away), the Powell/Mason/Hyde cable car lines are a short walk, Union Square is just a short walk, and it's just a short taxi ride to the ballet, opera, or symphony. One word of caution, if you want the traditional, impersonal, corporate/business hotel, this may not be what your are looking for. However, if you are willing to try a small, comfortable, hip/funky incredibly well-run Kimpton property, give the Hotel Triton a try. We can't wait to come back again for our 7th stay.

Room Tip: Rooms on Bush street side can be noisier during the day. No problem at night however. Can always o...

We chose this hotel based on a friend's recommendation. She was spot on. It was a perfect location for our little weekend get away. It is literally at the center of everything we wanted and needed.
Just two blocks from the Bart stop.
It was one of the stops for our hop on hop off tour bus.
Around the corner from la Boulange bakery, which is Awesome for breakfast and lunch.
A block away from Roxanne Cafe where we had a delish dinner, which is also a cable car stop, so we hopped on after dinner for a whirl around the city.
Two blocks away from a Market Street to catch street cars.
A walk to Union Square and the huge Market Street Mall.
We really enjoyed the ambiance of the hotel, The cute rubber duckies everywhere, the staff was so friendly, welcoming, and helpful in assisting us with any questions. On our first night we missed the evening wine reception, but they sent two glasses of wine up to our room upon our arrival. Amazingly thoughtful, dont you think?
There was always cool water and lemonade in the lobby, which was much needed since we were in 'Frisco for their one heat wave of the year, 75 degrees. Everyone was melting.
My husband and I, Angelenos, haven't been to San Francisco since the '70s when we were much younger. It has remakedly changed. We really loved the city. I can say, we will definitely be back
and stay here again.
