We love this little boutique hotel for many reasons. First, the decor is bright, happy and quirky. Second, the people who work there are friendly and helpful always. Third, the rooms, though smallish, are comfortable and interesting. Fourth, you're offered free coffee and tea in the morning, cookies in the afternoon, and wine at 5 pm. If you join the Kimpton loyalty program you get free Wifi internet access and other bonuses. This hotel is extremely central. We walked to dinner in North Beach and in Chinatown. It's right at the Chinatown gates, but just three blocks or so from Union Square and the cable cars. The price was very competitive, and worthwhile. As a travel agent, I can recommend this.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back overlooking a 'courtyard' are quieter.

We stayed 4 days with our one year old son. The maid left complimentary gifts for him including one of their signature rubber ducks. We loved the morning coffee & tea, the lemon-water and afternoon cookies. The employees are all very friendly, happy people who seem to like working there. I was a little weary that the bathroom/tub wouldn't be clean enough for our toddler, so I wiped the tub w/Clorox wipes. There was no hint of dirt on the wipes, which made me happy. We enjoyed our stay & will look for a Kimpton hotel in the future.

To start, overall I liked the Triton. It is located right next to the entrance to Chinatown and a couple of blocks from Union Square, so well located in the city. There are plenty of options as far as restaurants also. The hotel service was excellent and very friendly, nice staff! The lobby is funky and kewl. The room was nice, again, funky asia versus the 60s styling - bed was comfy. I was on the 6th floor and it can be a bit noisy, and my room was suppose to be quiet? Thanks goodness for ear plugs! I took the BART from the airport, so I did not have to park a car - because there is no option but valet and it is not a cheap option.

If you decide to train it in from SFO, use the BART and get off at the POWELL station and use exit A2, couple of blocks up Grant and you are there....

Room Tip: You might ask for a room that is not street facing!

Hi TheNetBuilder ~ thanks for posting your review. We always love to hear about our guests experiences. It's also very cool that you decided to take public transit! As you mentioned, it's super easy and a great way to save some $. Next time you're here, ask for one of the interior rooms, the views aren't great but they are away from the street noise or as I like to call it, the heart beat of the city.

I stayed at Hotel Triton for three nights and the service, decor, responsiveness, and overall vibe were all excellent. The location is great for getting to many different parts of the city - we walked to the Embarcadero, to Union Square, to the convention center.... Nice to have good shopping and neat little restaurants all around. The rooms here are creatively appointed, with nice bathrooms, good toiletries, and a well-stocked mini bar. If you are used to the Kimpton experience, Triton delivers on the signature perks - free coffee/tea, wine hour, free wifi, a running map, yoga equipment, etc.

We stayed for three nights and loved the location of this hotel, walking distance from union square, north beach restaurants!
The service was incredibly friendly and the free wine hour was a lovely touch!
Decor is very original and bright. Our room was small but clean and comfy. The only problem we had was the bed was very small and with my partner being very tall, he found it uncomfortable.
Overall, we had a good stay for the price we paid!

The Triton tries to get you to ignore the fact that it's an old slightly run down hotel by throwing a new coat of paint on it and some cute distractions at you every once in a while.

The good:
Location Location Location. There are 5 amazing restaurants within a block of the hotel, quick walk to Nob Hill and great shopping. Managers wine hour social from 5-6pm at least on weekdays, free decent coffee in the lobby. Quirky twist on a blend of modern design, late 60's flower power and a writers retreat theme going for it. Quirky and friendly staff. Had a chalk board hanging in the room near the desk for jotting down thoughts.

The bad:
The room was meh at best. Poor layout, no in room safe, no ventilation other than opening a window. Old building that had one too many coats of paint to cover old blemishes. Heating and cooling taken care of by a giant air conditioning unit taking up over half the windows in the room. Windows were out to a 6x3 foot square where I could reach out and touch the next window. Bed wasn't particularly comfortable. Had to move the bed to access enough power plugs. Lights are either super bright or off, no dimming capability anywhere in the room to set a mood. Giant UFO shaped lighting fixture in the middle of the room that completely overwhelms the space. Got a "Wine Tasters" room rate that included a bottle of wine with the room. Despite being a quick drive from official California wine country, a $5 bottle of junk red wine blend Argentina was left in the room with no wine glasses. No restaurant or bar in the hotel. Pet friendly means allergies for me. Be careful if you are super allergic to cats or dogs as they have certainly been in the rooms.

Honestly, I love quirky hotels and wanted to like the Triton but I'll likely look for somewhere new in a similar price range next time I'm in San Francisco.

Hi Tim M ~ What a bummer. We want everyone to like us too but it doesn't sound like that was the case this time. I'm sorry to hear that your stay wasn't what you had hoped for. If your plans ever bring you back to the city please feel free to reach out to me. As a part of Kimpton Hotels, we have 8 other options right here in the city. I'd be happy to help you discover the right one for you.
