“Great Stay Overall”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

I stayed at Hotel Triton for three nights and the service, decor, responsiveness, and overall vibe were all excellent. The location is great for getting to many different parts of the city - we walked to the Embarcadero, to Union Square, to the convention center.... Nice to have good shopping and neat little restaurants all around. The rooms here are creatively appointed, with nice bathrooms, good toiletries, and a well-stocked mini bar. If you are used to the Kimpton experience, Triton delivers on the signature perks - free coffee/tea, wine hour, free wifi, a running map, yoga equipment, etc.

We stayed for three nights and loved the location of this hotel, walking distance from union square, north beach restaurants!
The service was incredibly friendly and the free wine hour was a lovely touch!
Decor is very original and bright. Our room was small but clean and comfy. The only problem we had was the bed was very small and with my partner being very tall, he found it uncomfortable.
Overall, we had a good stay for the price we paid!

The Triton tries to get you to ignore the fact that it's an old slightly run down hotel by throwing a new coat of paint on it and some cute distractions at you every once in a while.

The good:
Location Location Location. There are 5 amazing restaurants within a block of the hotel, quick walk to Nob Hill and great shopping. Managers wine hour social from 5-6pm at least on weekdays, free decent coffee in the lobby. Quirky twist on a blend of modern design, late 60's flower power and a writers retreat theme going for it. Quirky and friendly staff. Had a chalk board hanging in the room near the desk for jotting down thoughts.

The bad:
The room was meh at best. Poor layout, no in room safe, no ventilation other than opening a window. Old building that had one too many coats of paint to cover old blemishes. Heating and cooling taken care of by a giant air conditioning unit taking up over half the windows in the room. Windows were out to a 6x3 foot square where I could reach out and touch the next window. Bed wasn't particularly comfortable. Had to move the bed to access enough power plugs. Lights are either super bright or off, no dimming capability anywhere in the room to set a mood. Giant UFO shaped lighting fixture in the middle of the room that completely overwhelms the space. Got a "Wine Tasters" room rate that included a bottle of wine with the room. Despite being a quick drive from official California wine country, a $5 bottle of junk red wine blend Argentina was left in the room with no wine glasses. No restaurant or bar in the hotel. Pet friendly means allergies for me. Be careful if you are super allergic to cats or dogs as they have certainly been in the rooms.

Honestly, I love quirky hotels and wanted to like the Triton but I'll likely look for somewhere new in a similar price range next time I'm in San Francisco.

Hi Tim M ~ What a bummer. We want everyone to like us too but it doesn't sound like that was the case this time. I'm sorry to hear that your stay wasn't what you had hoped for. If your plans ever bring you back to the city please feel free to reach out to me. As a part of Kimpton Hotels, we have 8 other options right here in the city. I'd be happy to help you discover the right one for you.

The Triton was a great launch point for a recent San Fran visit! My husband and I decided to spend a long weekend in San Francisco without knowing much about the city. Its location can't be beat! The Union Square area has fantastic bars, restaurants and shopping, and is an easy walk to Chinatown, the Embarcadero area and the Ferry Building (20 min walk, but a really nice 20 mins). You can grab the cable cars a few blocks away, and there are also lots of buses in the area that will take to you north and west. A warning that the Triton/Union Sq is about a 40-45 min bus ride from Golden Gate Park, but it's totally worth checking out & spending part of a day there even at that distance. Did I mention that this place is close to really great restaurants and bars? If you are in town on a Saturday, the farmers market at the Ferry Building is a must-do foodie paradise, and I would also recommend renting a bike and tooling around the city. Grab the ferry to Sausalito for an easy day trip or rent a car and go check out Muir Woods.

About the hotel: the design is bright and colorful without being too kitchy (in my opinion), but the rooms are small. We stayed in a king room on the top floor, which was lovely and had a halfway decent view of the neighborhood, looking east. However, I booked through Travelocity Incentives and reserved/paid for a "premium" king room, but I felt that the room itself was no different than the standard king room, and I had a hard time figuring out (at least from the info on the hotel's website) what the difference(s) was. Perhaps the "premium" part had to do with being on the top floor? Who knows. There was not coffee-making capabilities in the room, which always disappoints me. Yes, they have coffee available in the lobby every morning, but that also requires making yourself someone decent and leaving your room to go get it. I also found the bathroom set up a little awkward, and even though I am generally pro- separate sink and toilet/shower areas, it was all kind of cramped into the vestibule of the room. There was no place to hang hand towels or washcloths at the sink, so you either had to hang them on the hooks next to the bed or inside the toilet/shower area (both out of easy reach). Also since the sink is not really in a separate space, you might wake up your roommate if you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. But otherwise, the room was very clean, the bed comfy, and the hotel generally quiet. As a bonus, there were awesome animal-print robes available for us in the closet, but the room wasn't as palatial as it should have been to really warrant wearing them. A nice touch though! The staff was nice, and the free daily wine hour and always-available infused water in the lobby are also nice and welcome touches. I would likely stay there again!

Room Tip: If street noise bothers you, you'll get some here so ask for a room not facing the street.

Stayed in this hotel for 4 nights with my Mum

The hotel is in an amazing location, walking distance to everything, really highly recommend staying here because of the location

'Breakfast' was included but breakfast was - a brown bag with some juice, muffin and fruit... Was fine but shame it wasnt a proper breakfast and mis-sold by the site we booked on, (the only reason we are not giving the hotel 5 stars)

Staff were really nice and friendly and happy and bubbly and always willing to help..

Rooms were nice and colourful, quite small especially the bathroom but nevermind, we didnt mind it too much

The tea/coffee in the lobby in the morning was really nice, really loved the concept

The drinks at 5 pm, shame no soft drinks only wine! What a disappointment, but nevermind, hotel should be aware that not all people drink alcohol!

If I ever came to San Francisco again, would definitely stay here and would definitely recommend to friends and family

From our first email contact to our arrival in the colourful lobby, Hotel Triton was an especially welcoming place to stay in San Francisco Our beautiful decorated hotel room (small, like most hotel rooms in San Francisco. If you're prepared for this it's fine) had a goldfish, rubber duckies, books and snacks for the children waiting for us. The children would have preferred to stay in the hotel to play with the rubber duckies in the little fish pond our front all day. We didn't get to try the happy hour or free breakfast that is apparently served, but we did get to try the hot chocolate that came with chocolate chips and marshmallows. Definitely become a member of Kimpton Hotel's free loyalty program, since it gives you free internet and a $10 minibar voucher. The hotel is located right next to the Chinatown gate, close to the Ferry Building and BART stations. We'd definitely return here on another visit to San Francisco if we could find another deal.

Excellent little boutique hotel. Not one of the fanciest Kimptons - rooms are small and a little sparse - but great location and service. The restaurant next door is somehow affiliated - they make room for hotel guests - and the food is above par.

If you're traveling as a tourist to SF, don't want to spend a fortune but stay in a modest and well appointed hotel, you could do a lot worse. I'd certainly stay again.

Room Tip: It's a city hotel so expect street noise. If you ask for a quiet room, they try to find one that...

Hi Lexingtonbrit ~ Thanks for posting your review. The restaurant next door is Cafe de la Presse. It is amazing! They serve our In Room Dinning as well so next time treat yourself to a delicious breakfast in bed. The croquet madame is my favorite.
