“New Year's Eve convenience”
Reviewed January 27, 2007

My friends and I needed a hotel in the middle of everything for New Year's eve. I booked this hotel room less than a month before the big day through the hotel's website. The room was a decent size, good amenities, and although they were having a huge party that night (which i wouldn't pay $180 for again), we were able to sleep through the night with little noise when we finally were done partying. I would definitely stay here again. But if you're looking for new year's eve fun, skip the overpriced hotel party with the bad music and wet dancefloor. They must have hired every weddding deejay they could find. The location, however, was fabulous, the bed was awesome, and the price was right for New Year's Eve!

Let’s not get issues mixed here; the Westin St. Francis is a wonderful property. The problem is if you think you got a deal guess again!

I stayed at the Westin or two day on business. I booked the room through Hotwire as I usually do. The problems started before I even got to the hotel. I called the St. Francis to confirm my reservation a few days prior to my stay. I was told at that point that all hotwire rooms were only the rooms that provided a full bed. There is no way my wife and I would fit in a full bed, so we had to pay $35 a night for the upgrade. I have never had to add money to get a bed we could actually sleep in.

Another detail that was conveniently left out is that the Westin St. Francis charges $51.30 a day for parking. I am used to paying for parking as most hotels now charge you. Even though you are staying at their property, and in most cases there is no other parking options, they charge you for parking. This however, in my honest opinion is a complete rip off!

So take your great deal at the Westin; $125 a night. Now add the parking and the up charge for a bed large enough for two adults to actually sleep in; another $86.30. I’m not sure you tell me is it a great deal any more at $211.30 a night?

  • Liked — The Room was large and well appointed.
  • Disliked — Up charges and added expenses.

I stayed here for a business conference. The room was nice and clean, and although you can feel the age of the hotel the furnishings are not out-dated. The location is great, especially for shopping and dining. The lobby is very active, so if you want to be in the heart of the action this is the hotel for you. There are several restaurants and bars at the hotel and many more within walking distance. The staff did a great job with our conference, and the St. Francis Suite is a great place to have a meeting or small conference.

rooms were clean, bed was comfortable, but very tiny and dated interiors. elevators are small and slow. location is ideal for shopping in union square area. would stay again, but would try to get a better price. parking is very expensive and tax is added to parking fee. overall average rating is about all this deserved.

My husband and I stayed at The Westin St. Francis, just after Thanksgiving for 3 nights. Our room over looked Union Square and was spacious and very clean. The down side it was near the elevators and they are NOISEY, if you are a light sleeper ask to be away from the elevators. You can't beat the location for shopping and food. We ate in some great places. E&O Tranding on Stockton was fantastic(recommedation from the staff at the hotel). Kuletos on Powell is very good as well, however make a reservation. Also everyone that visits SF needs to go to The Gold Dust on Powell. A great bar with great staff. One of the many highlights of our trip was a Segdway tour, can not recommend it enough. Don't worry its really easy and a blast(but remember you must dress in layers). Enjoy San Francisco its our favorite city and it never disappoints.

  • Liked — The staff and the location
  • Disliked — rooms next to the elevators
  • Tips/Secrets — make reservation if you want to eat anywhere other than Mels Diner(which is really good)

My first visit to San Francisco was in the mid 1970's and 30 years later it is still one of my favourite cities in the US. Maybe its something to do with the atmosphere - or just riding the cable cars.

There are PLENTY of great hotels in San Francisco and there are many great deals to be had as well. We decided on the Westin St Francis for the terminus of our mini Christmas holiday trek from Los Angeles to San Francisco for lots of reasons: the Hertz rental drop off is on the back side of this building and saved us over $100 versus dropping the car off at SFO, we wanted to enjoy some of the Christmas experience around Union Square and it is on the cable car (and near the trolley) lines over to Fisherman's Wharf.

I won't write much about the hotel itself - its history speaks for itself and it has surely earned its place as a San Francisco landmark. If you don't stay here it would still be worth your while to walk through the lobbies, etc.

We spent three nights here including Christmas eve. Two of the nights we got by cashing in Starwood points and the third night was paid for (to help replenish the points and keep the program going!).

There is a great resource on the hotel's web site which details just about everything on the hotel including a description of each of the room types. Having this in front of you will greatly aid figuring out what kind of accommodation you may want to book here. At the time of our stay we found the St Francis fact sheet by going to their web site at westinstfrancis.com and clicking on the Hotel Fact Sheet button in the lower left hand side of the home page.

We stayed in a bay view "grandview" room in the main (new) tower. Although this was built in the 1970's everything was as if it was new yesterday. Even with all the holidaymakers around and a couple of football games going on over the holiday we still found our accommodations extremely quiet and peaceful.

During our three day stint we had the opportunity to be served by numerous hotel employees. We found absolutely everyone to be extremely courteous, friendly and helpful. And during the busy times the hotel even had employees controlling access to guest floor elevators. (Maybe tourists were enjoying the high speed glass elevator ride views to the top of the 30-something floor?)

Service and location comes at a price - and that is most certainly true here at the Westin St Francis. By shopping around and understanding the room categories and locations you can have an enjoyable stay at an affordable price.

This is a great hotel on Union square. It is expensive, but its great for a once in a life time experience. The lobby is amazing (both front and back) with a piano in the evening. We stayed in the modern block at the back, and our room didn't have a room over the square. The breakfasts are very good, but again are quite expensive. If elegance is your thing, then this hotel is for you.

  • Liked — Location and Elegence
  • Disliked — No view
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for a high floor in the modern block (to get a view)
