There can't be a more convenient place to stay downtown. You can just feel the history especially in the bar having a martini. The service is great and the rooms are reasonably priced. Go and enjoy the best city in the world.

My wife and I planed a weeks vacation to San Francisco for our 35th anniversary. We used a online booking company not knowing where we would stay. when we were informed the Westin St. Frances was ours for the week we were happy. but the big surprise came at check in. While checking in my wife mentioned we were on our anniversary, the agent made a phone call and with a big smile upgraded us to a suite facing Union Park. After getting into our room we went out for dinner, upon returning to our room there was a bottle of champaign and chocolate covered strawberries on the table in the living room. There was also a dozen red roses and a card from management wishing us a happy anniversary. We were on cloud nine and made the Westin St. Francis our only place to stay in San Francisco.

I traveled extensively for a living in an earlier life and stayed at the Westin St. Francis for at least 7 days out of a month for a period of several years. This is great hotel and showcases everything about the 'Westin' experience. The staff is super friendly, the decor and ambiance is always consistent, and most importantly the rooms were always presented in great condition (nothing seemed old or 'tired'). Parking is SUPER expensive - but for this part of the city it is not surprising. Unless your company is paying for you to be there I would suggest looking for cheaper options nearby. The hotel is right on Union Square so there are plenty of eating options. Whether it's picking some food at Naan N Curry or a slice of pizza just a block up from the hotel I never felt tired of the options available. Heck I even walked through the tenderloin area to get some decent Korean food. Great hotel, great location, if you can afford it :)

Room Tip: I always preferred that had a view of the city as opposed to Union Square.

Be sure to stay in the Tower. The old, original building fronting Union Square is not too soundproof, with street noise. The Tower has outside elevators which can be cold, but the ride and views are well worth it. There is an Expresso Bar in the lobby that is very good and convenient. The remodeled rooms in the Tower are very comfortable, and make for a good nights sleep. Walking distance to all the main stores.

Thank you for choosing The Westin St. Francis. I am thrilled to hear that you were able to experience our newly renovated guest rooms in our Tower building! I would have to agree that our lobby bar, Caruso's is incredibly convenient for those who are on the go, or even for those who would just like to sit back, relax and enjoy some afternoon tea and specially made in-house macarons! We hope to welcome you back to see us again very soon.

I actually live in the Bay Area but a business meeting required me to spend the night at the Westin St. Francis. To be blunt the hotel is simply run down, behind the times, badly in need of renovation and in need of staff who might actually care about the guests. And this rating was based on one of the top rooms in the tower on the "Starwood Floor". The room was dark. Furniture beaten up. The desk was particularly pathetic. Soaps etc of the quality of low rent motel. Check in was slow and inefficient. Not one smile to be seen. Hard to believe this used to be a magnificent grand hotel.

We stayed at the Westin for 6 nights, for a work conference.

Whilst our room was very large (2 double beds), others had tiny rooms (we were in the landmark buiding)

Our room had a stained couch, which I reported on the first night, but nothing was ever done about it. I tried flipping the cushions over, only to find they were stained on that side also, and there was food in between the cushions. Eeww

On the plus side:
We asked for a mini fridge, which was complimentary
Can't ask for a better location
Lobby decor was lovely for those who love period buildings.
Our bath plug didn't work, and they had someone fix it within 15 minutes.
Gym was good.

Cons:,
I was charged $2 for a tea bag (there was only one in the room)
We happened to come back whilst the maid was cleaning one day, and she left, with the room half done.
Rollaway bed was an extra $35 per night
Whilst the kids club is mentioned on their website, we never recieved anything, nor any information on it.

Given the rack rate is around $500 per night, I was expecting a lot more.

We like older hotels, mostly because the rooms are bigger. The Westin was exactly the kind of space we like. Yes, you can hear your neighbors, since the rooms were made as suites, with two, three or even four of the rooms connected by regular doors. But that's a small price to pay for a big, marble bath and room to move around. I also enjoyed overlooking Union Square--especially since it was Chinese New Year with a huge parade passing just under our window.

Service was quick and efficient, and we really enjoyed the cocktail lounge on the first floor. Perfect Old Fashioned for less than I pay in NY.

Room Tip: Go for the tower if quiet is required. Stay in the older section if you don't mind knowing you...
