Be sure to stay in the Tower. The old, original building fronting Union Square is not too soundproof, with street noise. The Tower has outside elevators which can be cold, but the ride and views are well worth it. There is an Expresso Bar in the lobby that is very good and convenient. The remodeled rooms in the Tower are very comfortable, and make for a good nights sleep. Walking distance to all the main stores.

Thank you for choosing The Westin St. Francis. I am thrilled to hear that you were able to experience our newly renovated guest rooms in our Tower building! I would have to agree that our lobby bar, Caruso's is incredibly convenient for those who are on the go, or even for those who would just like to sit back, relax and enjoy some afternoon tea and specially made in-house macarons! We hope to welcome you back to see us again very soon.

I actually live in the Bay Area but a business meeting required me to spend the night at the Westin St. Francis. To be blunt the hotel is simply run down, behind the times, badly in need of renovation and in need of staff who might actually care about the guests. And this rating was based on one of the top rooms in the tower on the "Starwood Floor". The room was dark. Furniture beaten up. The desk was particularly pathetic. Soaps etc of the quality of low rent motel. Check in was slow and inefficient. Not one smile to be seen. Hard to believe this used to be a magnificent grand hotel.

We stayed at the Westin for 6 nights, for a work conference.

Whilst our room was very large (2 double beds), others had tiny rooms (we were in the landmark buiding)

Our room had a stained couch, which I reported on the first night, but nothing was ever done about it. I tried flipping the cushions over, only to find they were stained on that side also, and there was food in between the cushions. Eeww

On the plus side:
We asked for a mini fridge, which was complimentary
Can't ask for a better location
Lobby decor was lovely for those who love period buildings.
Our bath plug didn't work, and they had someone fix it within 15 minutes.
Gym was good.

Cons:,
I was charged $2 for a tea bag (there was only one in the room)
We happened to come back whilst the maid was cleaning one day, and she left, with the room half done.
Rollaway bed was an extra $35 per night
Whilst the kids club is mentioned on their website, we never recieved anything, nor any information on it.

Given the rack rate is around $500 per night, I was expecting a lot more.

We like older hotels, mostly because the rooms are bigger. The Westin was exactly the kind of space we like. Yes, you can hear your neighbors, since the rooms were made as suites, with two, three or even four of the rooms connected by regular doors. But that's a small price to pay for a big, marble bath and room to move around. I also enjoyed overlooking Union Square--especially since it was Chinese New Year with a huge parade passing just under our window.

Service was quick and efficient, and we really enjoyed the cocktail lounge on the first floor. Perfect Old Fashioned for less than I pay in NY.

Room Tip: Go for the tower if quiet is required. Stay in the older section if you don't mind knowing you...

The Westin is still one of the best locations in the city near shopping and restaurants. I was pleasantly surprised on this latest visit that many of the rooms have been recently been renovated in the new tower with fresh carpeting, furniture and décor. It is definitely a fresh feeling that was needed. There is also a new wine bar outside of the Westin which is nice place for a glass of wine and a cheese snack if you are looking for a nice meeting spot outside of their classic rowdy lobby bar.

The only downside is that the room rate as gone up, but the overall value given the location, sleep quality and service is very high. The gym has good equipment, but if you actually want a slot in one of the machines, you must get in well before 7 AM or you won't have a chance to work out.

Great hotel, great history, great spot. Located in the heart of SFO and right on Union Square. Location is fantastic. A great mix of old charm and 21st century. Stayed in the Tower section, rooms done nicely and grat views. Breakfast in the Oak Room was good and Caruso'd offerd a nice place to relax, have a cup of coffee and check back into work. Staff great, meeting rooms sufficient and up to standards. All in all a real good place to hang out and work.

I wish I would have booked the room for 2 nights. The room was spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable. Nice shower in the bathroom. The only draw back was the toilet was like you would find in a bathroom stall. I would highly recommend this hotel
