“I'd rather stay at Bates Motel”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

Booked about 9 months in advance. Upon arrival we was delighted to find out that we had been given a ground floor room (insert sarcastic tone). The room was dated & had a bizarre musky smell. I went into the bathroom to wash my face and to my horror there was a pubic hair on the front of my towel proudly waving at me in all its disgusting glory. Asked to move rooms, we (my fiancée and I) were told nothing could be done until the morning as they were full, which was fair. In the morning we were moved to the 5th floor, great!!! Only issue......the lift was broken! We then proceeded to carry our luggage, no assistance offered, up 5 flights of the narrowest stairs. I felt like a Sherpa! By the time I got to the top I wanted to plant a Union Jack and declare the mountain mine! The new room had the same funky smell & the bathroom looked like a horror scene. The lift was out of use fore our 4 night stay. If you're thinking of staying here, you're best grabbing a sleeping bag, a bottle of jack & hang with some of the local hobos round the corner instead.

There is valet curbside to stairs that take you to the front desk. Great hotel with so much charm.
Very comfortable rooms with all the amenities. A beautiful dining room with breakfast hours and a bar.with a happy hour makes it a very comfortable place to stay in San Francisco. Walking is good to many locations of interest with lots of public transportation nearby.

The first thing I noticed was a sign on the exterior that read "warning, this facility contains one or more chemicals know to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and reproductive harm."
The second thing I noticed was the dank smell of must.
Thirdly was the chairs that were tattered and in need of reupholstery
I don't know how this is rated as a 3 star hotel, but I haven't stayed in a place this bad since I was in college at a motel 6..
There is no AC, which isn't normally an issue in SF, but if may be hard to sleep with the windows open and the sound of downtown traffic coming in at high decibels.

Room Tip: They have no rooms with two queen sized beds, so if you are traveling with 3 or more people to a roo...

I apologize for your poor experience. The sign you are referring to is for tobacco smoking not the hotel itself. I do believe I've addressed lack of A/C units. I will look into finding another possible solution in the near future. Thank You.

This was my refuge from the chaos of Saigon. The city is in rapid growth, where street and sidewalk infrastructure is lacking for pedestrians. The Hotel Majestic is a wonderful hotel, with an old world feel. The rooms are very large, and super clean. The roof top dining for morning breakfast is fantastic with great food, and wonderful view of the river below. The morning show of the barge traffic on the river below is incredible.

Room Tip: All rooms are great

This hotel, at one time, must have been really something. Today it is an aging Grande Dame, trying to seem relevant. The outside is beautiful. The lobby and the people working there are wonderful. What some think to be problems, such as the claw legged bathtubs, are really the charm of the hotel. Air conditioning is not an issue in San Francisco.
When I arrived the lamp in my room didn't work, and one of the bulbs in the chandelier was out. The staff was unable to replace or fix the lamp. No big deal. When I went on a wine tour in Sonoma a woman, who happened to be there the same night, had the exact same issue in another room. This is indicative of the problems of the hotel
The Queen Anne, just up the street, would be a better choice.

Both my husband and me were a littl bit concernd due to some bad reviews and did not know exactly what to expect. We use to stay at Best Western Plus and like the standards and amenities of almost all the hotels we visited, nevertheless chain hotels were actually too expansive in August and finally we found a good deal and went for The Majestic. It was definitely the best choice ever! The outside is enchanting, locatd in the heart of SF hills, just a few blocks from the Painted Ladies, Van Ness restaurants and shops, and Japantown. If you love to walk and are fit enought for it Fort Mason park is at medium/hard walking distance. The room was small but clean and nice, we did not feel any dust smell or so. If you are more than 2 people make sure to get a bigger room. The great surprise is the furniture and style, it reflects all the best of rich and tendy history of high society travellers, French chandeliers, draperies and white and gold bathroom handles and tubs. The morning staff is more frindly, you'd better ask them if you need help. Referring to the parking hot topic we always found place on the 2 hour parking street that is free fron 6PM to AM. Breakfast is not included, they offer free coffe in the morning at the restaurant. The hotel is not high rated as it is surely old and maybe need some maintainance, althought we visited San Francisco before and slept in a Columbus street motel, maybe people writing bad rewiews have never tried standard or affordable price SF motels!
