The hotel is Centrally located and the decor was full of character. The room we stayed in had a 4 poster bed and had no air condition but very warm. We had to open the window all night. if you need a Taxi, you're better off catching from outside the hotel. Breakfast room is very nicely decorated and food was satisfactory.

Room Tip: If you try to get a taxi, you're better off getting one from outside the hotel. Hotel parking is...

Thank you for staying with us and dining with us. Many times people come to San Francisco and want to eat exquisite food, and at the Majestic Cafe and Butterfly Lounge, we try to live up to the hype!

Wife and I stayed here before venturing off to Yosemite and we enjoyed it. The room was charming but comfortably furnished. The general cleanliness was good. The bathroom was clean even under the clawfoot style tub and the tile floor.

We were afraid being without airconditioning but there was a nice breeze.

We would stay again.

Nice location and easy parking that was free overnight if you just read the signs!

This is a nice little boutique hotel in the lower Pacific Palisades section of San Francisco and worth a stop when you feel like an old school hotel in San Fran! The rooms are a decent size, nice comfortable beds and a very cozy atmosphere everywhere you go!

The bathroom, while updated, still sports a claw foot tub/shower which brought me back to a circa 1900 home I once owned - all in all very functional and a very enjoyable stay. Add to that that a very favorable rate - look around for the deals- and you'll enjoy this hotel very much.

The lobby is decorated in the style of the age of this hotel and quite welcoming with a restaurant and bar off to the left when you walk in off the street. The bar is small and friendly and you're likely to meet another traveler or two and have a very nice conversation. The restaurant is nicely maintained and the food is good - Italian in general and well done. I had a late spaghetti and meatballs one evening and found it quite tasty. At breakfast the omelet was nicely cooked with nice crisp bacon.

There are five floors in the hotel, not too much of a view if you're looking for one, but comfort and nostalgia are worth a trip.

FYI free Wi-Fi

Thank you for your great review. I am very appreciative that you've commented on the restaurant and bar that are easily overlooked by the magnificent lobby.

We've actually got a large butterfly collection on the walls of our "Butterfly Lounge" that most people love to look at in the bar while enjoying a masterfully crafted cocktail!

This was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at! No air conditioning and the service was awful! Everything about this hotel is outdated! The person working the front desk purposely ignored us! We went down stairs to check out and he is on his phone texting purposely ignoring is and not even acknowledging we were standing there

Dear Guest,

I'm very sorry for your poor experience with the front desk agent. Most of the time all our employees are quiet friendly and helpful.

This grand old lady, once renovated, is in need of another round of refurbishment. If you read the website, you'll get the wrong impression. It's been a while since the hotel was renovated, and it's recently been bought by new owners. Whether or not they will update the split upholstery, shredded bathroom cabinet, peeling bathtub enamel, etc. remains to be seen. That having been said, we did not experience the stained sheets mentioned by other hotel guests. Our sheets were pristine, the toiletries were above average, and the basket of snacks was nicely diverse. We were given a free upgrade to a junior suite, a large room with a bay in the hotel tower containing a sofa, coffee table and reading lamp. In addition, we had a desk and chair, so it would have been possible to do some work, if we'd wanted to. The hotel restaurant is closed on Sunday evening and all day Monday, so our Sunday afternoon arrival presented some challenges as far as food goes. Please note: the room rate does not include breakfast, which is a bit pricey in the hotel restaurant, but there are other choices within a few blocks. The hotel location, on Sutter and Gough, is convenient to several bus lines, so it's easy to get around. The narrow, twisting hallways may put some people off, but we found them a charming, integral part of this oldest standing hotel in San Francisco. It must be said, though, that the lobby is several steps up from the street, and hauling a suitcase up was a bit daunting. There's a large staircase to all floors, as would have been fitting when the hotel was originally built. Now, there's also a small elevator, which may be slow to come at checkout time. There's not only wi-fi in the room but also a computer with internet access in the lobby which is available to guests free of charge. Overall, we have mixed feelings about this hotel and hope the new owners will bring it back to how it must have been when the previous owners renovated it. If they do this, we'd up our rating in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Sutter is a bit noisy, so if that's an issue, you might want to request a room at the back of th...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the detailed review. You are correct, new ownership has taken over since 2011. Since that time, we've already given this "old lady" a great remodel including, new room carpeting, free wifi, new 32" flat screen TV's, top-of-the-line Serta beds, and electronic doorlocks. By the end of the year, you will be pleased to hear, that we will be updated the lobby/hallway carpets, room-safes, and reupholstered furniture.

In good time, we'll have this little hotel to become the gem it once was 100+ years ago.

We stayed here on our honeymoon on our way from the east coast to Hawaii. I wanted a romantic boutique hotel. The Hotel majestic did just that. It also had a Stephen king classic kind of feel to it, not that it was creepy but just a classic early 1900's hotel feel. The location was good as well.
