My partner and I stayed for one night at the Inn. Our last downtown stay in a different SF hotel had been decidely unpleasant. Our recent experience at the Inn at Union Square completely made up for our past experience with another SF hotel! Wayne and his staff were very helpful and made us feel very much at home. The hotel itself is in a great location with so many things just walking distance away. After a hard day of touristing it was great to come back to the wine and cheese reception. Wayne was great with his wealth of knowledge about SF present and past. He really makes the effort to make guests feel special and welcome. We will absolutely stay here again next time we are in town!

I stayed here during a conference in May of 2013.
I went with this hotel because of the great reviews.
But it is still a three star hotel, with all the implications that come out of it:
- it is small. The breakfast area is literally a table (on the 3rd floor, I think, but most likely on all floors). The first day I had breakfast, there was another couple there, and we had to sit there all three of us).
- There is no view from the room (at least not from my room, see attached pic)

Overall, they did a great job, nothing to complain there.
Also, the location is excellent.
Granted, I was out for most of the time, but I wouldn't choose the hotel again.
I just people like me, who might consider the hotel, should think about this (which I didn't do at the time)

A decidedly mixed review for this hotel. I think I’ll do it in bullet points.
• Great location. On Union Square, you’ve all the major stores just a short walk away.
• Very nice and friendly staff.
• They leave out wine, sodas, cheese and crackers every night. I read about this before and didn’t think I’d bother, but I’ve partaken every night, Diet Coke and cheese n crackers and have really enjoyed it. I don’t really drink, but if you do, you can help yourself to white and red wine. I’ve taken snacks to my room but you can sit and enjoy them in the room they are served.
• Adequate continental breakfast left out for you to help yourself to.
• I emailed to say that we were arriving on our honeymoon and they very kindly upgraded us to their suite for a night and also left a bottle of sparkling wine and a little box of chocolates. That was very nice, they didn’t have to do that and it was much appreciated.
Now somethings not so good.
• The main thing is the street noise and all the noise from outside. The windows are very old and even when they are closed, they might as well be wide open. You are on a main road and you’ll hear every noise. Every siren, every engine, every yell, every argument, every annoying saxophonist droning on and on and on. This really is a very bad let down and the hotel would do well by getting their windows completely replaced ASAP.
• Again with the back windows, you’ll hear the constant hum and bangs from various air conditioning machines and lots of noise from God knows what else. I was woken every morning at 3am, 4 am...fortunately I brought lots of ear plugs but there was still lots of noise even with them in.
• Although the cheese wine room is a good thing, for some bizarre reason, when we returned to the hotel for 3 nights, they put us in the room right beside this gathering room. We’re still on honeymoon and even if we weren’t, it’s not great staying in a room right beside one where people are gathering drinking. The cheese / wine only lasts a couple of hours in the evening though, maybe I’m nit-picking but I just don’t like noise and there’s a lot of noise in these rooms.
• There’s no fan in the bathroom which is very odd as there is a fan in the bedroom and sitting room. A fan is needed in the bathrooms.
• Security seems lax if not completely absent. No-one stopped us any time even though there were different people on the desks. Sometimes, the person manning the desk didn’t even bother to look up.
• I’m sorry to have to say this, but every night when we returned, the front desk and hallway stank of urine. I don’t know if this is a sewage or drainage issue or if there are flowers placed that are particularly stinking, but it’s totally disgusting and again, the hotel needs to get it sorted.
So, it is a good hotel. The rooms are nice. The facilities are good. Free Wi-Fi in your room which is free and fast and easy to access and use. Nice big flat screen TV’s in the bedroom and sitting rooms. It’s clean, the staff are nice...but it really is let down by the old windows that let street/outside noise into your room. I might as well have been sitting in the street outside next to the awful saxophone player for the last 90 minutes. Would I recommend the hotel? Maybe/maybe not. Would I stay again? No.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your recent stay and for including the Inn at Union Square on your honeymoon trip. Congratulations once again! We appreciate your feedback as it is invaluable to us to improve our facility and services. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed our complimentary breakfast and evening wine hour, complimentary high speed WiFi internet, and friendly staff. we are sorry to hear that the noise of the city bothered you during your stay. Being located in the center of the busy Union Square shopping area has its benefits however we can imagine all the activity could be uncomfortable if you are not used to it. We want to assure you that we take security and the safety of our guests very seriously and keep a close eye on the comings and goings of guests. With our camera system, secured access to the guest room floors and controlled entry to the building after hours, we keep our guests secure. After reading the reviews, we went ahead and recently booked 4 nights at this location. I will try to make it easier to under stand my review by doing the hotel's pros and cons.

Pros:

a)- Location but then there are several good upper scale hotels in the area that cost half what this hotel charges.
2)- Free breakfast and a good choice too (how much is it worth to you?)
3)- Basket full of fruits (oranges/apples/pears) on 2 floors open to all customers (how much can you eat though?
4)- Courteous staff.
5)- Clean facility

Cons:

6)- It's a very small hotel. we had two rooms (a bed room & a sofa room) & we barely had space to walk not to mention once we put our luggage (3 bags) down on the floor, we had absolutely no room. Bath room was pretty small too and as a reference, we are not big people either 5' 8"..

7)- No A/C and with temp in high 70's/80's, we needed air conditioning..

8)- The killer however was the price we paid ($420 + tax/night) when the hotel like "Westin" just across the street with all the amenities and with much bigger rooms and with A/C cost only $195 + Tax, thus making this particular hotel waaay out of place.

9)- No lobby in this hotel though. I still remember when we walked in, there wasn't enough space for 2 adults/2 kids under 11 with 3 bags?

I wanted to give it 2 star but decided to give 3 instead, just for the fact that it is however, conveniently located, staff was very cordial (let us check out after 2 nights with minimal penalty) and had free good break fast.

The size of the rooms for the price you pay, makes it hard to believe, why this place has such high reviewes?

BTW, we were all very happy and felt at home, once we checked in at westin as the rooms were not only big and chilled but had a great vibrant lobby with a very nice coffee shop.

Room Tip: If you must stay at this hotel, try getting a room on a higher floor so that you can open up your wi...

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your recent visit to the Inn at Union Square and for sharing your comments. Feedback from our guests provide invaluable information to help us improve our facility and services. We are very sorry to hear we did not meet your expectation. We strive to provide every guest with an exceptional stay however it seems we fell short of that goal. As a historic boutique hotel, we cannot always offer the same facilities as our larger cousins but feel that our personalized service and extras such as complimentary breakfast, evening wine hour, fresh baked cookies and turn-down service as well as complimentary WiFi, offers our guests a unique and enjoyable San Francisco experience. We are happy you did find accommodations to your liking in San Francisco and that you had a nice visit to our city. Thank you again for your comments

Just spent 4 days at The Inn, and had an amazing time. The staff were so helpful and helped plan our day with advice on trams, buses and good places to visit. Complimentary breakfast was a bonus and we enjoyed the managers reception each night where we met other travelers and the Manager who had interesting stories to share about San Fran and it's residents. No air con but when we asked a portable fan was placed in our room and it was fine. The location is great and would thoroughly recommend to anyone wanting a friendly handy place to stay .

Stayed here June 27-29. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Great location…close to Union Square (Tram pick-up, arts, etc.). Service is GREAT...especially Wayne ...the 5 o'clock complementary wine guy...his history and stories of the San Fran area were fantastic…only downside was no air conditioning…but that’s what you get when you stay at a boutique hotel…Yes. Would definitely recommend.

We stayed at the Inn for a week last summer, and it was just perfect! This narrow slice of heaven provides a cocoon of comfort and indulgence after a day of walking and exploring this beautiful city. The convenient location in the heart of Union Square puts you close to everything. The front desk staff know everything and can help with directions, recommendations, tours, etc. The room is cozy, and there is no view, but it's quiet and comfortable in the heart of the action on Union Square. Complimentary happy hour and bedtime cookies made it seem like we were honored guests in someone's home. The owner came one night and visited with us. We can't wait to go back, and we will definitely book the Inn at Union Square again. It will be our home whenever we visit San Francisco!
