Stayed here for 4 nights at the start of our Road Trip. Room very spacious and clean. Bed very large and comfortable. Bathroom very nice and clean. Asked for a high floor quiet room and this is what we got, although we didn't have a view which we didn't mind. It was relatively quiet. Staff very nice and helpful. Bar in hotel quite expensive and very small Hotel is excellent location just off Union Square. Highly reccommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor quiet room to avoid noise from street.

Stayed at the Donatello for 4 nights at the end of September as the beginning to a 17-day road trip through California and Nevada and was very impressed.

The room was massive with huge king bed, a wet bar, TV and all the usual extras you expect from a hotel like this. We asked for a room on a high floor to avoid the reported noise from street level, but despite the fact we were given one, the nightly "San Francisco Bottle Smashing Finals" took place in the street below outside the Ruby Sky nightclub between 2 and 3am. I doubt any room could be high enough to escape this, but no fault attributed to the hotel.

Ate in the Zingari restaurant once and found it to be of high quality and a pricetag to match, especially for drinks, but this IS SF after all.

Had dealings with the porters, valet parking and concierge and all were superb, especially Chris, the concierge in the Club Lounge who engaged my wife and I in conversation on all the evenings we returned to our hotel after dinner. Turns out he's a big Ray Winstone fan and we chatted into the late hours with him about movies and music etc. Our SF trip was made all the more pleasurable by dealing with such a friendly, professional and competent guy.

No real downsides with the hotel itself but found, as others have mentioned, the profusion of homeless people in the area (especially around Union Square) to be a minor problem. None were threatening or violent, but most were persistent in their pursuit of cash, and some were occasionally shouty! But we both work in London, so we're used to some of that anyway.

You couldn't stop in the street to consult a map for five seconds before being accosted by one of them to offer you their unsolicited "tourist advice," before holding their hands out for renumeration. We found we deliberately didn't stick around and kept walking forward without eye contact every time we went out as a result, which spoilt things a little.

Plenty of places to eat locally. We found Pinecrest a block down the best place for breakfast, but get there early as the queues could be out the door after 8am, and a place called Daily Grill on Geary Street was the best place for evening meals - looks small from the front, but went back a long way, past the bar.

Would definitely recommend The Donatello to anyone staying in SF.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the Mason St side if you can to avoid the worst of the noise, preferably high...

I just spent a 5 nights at The Donatello in San Francisco. Just a few blocks from Union Square, Cable Cars and BART station. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are very modern and spacious. Highly recommended.

Super convenient location and the recent remodel was a big improvement. Beautiful deco room with a TV in the bathroom mirror (very cool). Friendly staff. Nightly turn down service and chocolates a nice touch. 5th floor had a lovely outside deck. Easy access to Union Square and lots of great stores (Nike, Macy's, Coach, etc.). A very good choice for the SF tourist.

Room Tip: 5th floor access to large outside deck is very nice.

Fantastic remodel!!! I spent one night in this hotel about 3 years ago and it was really shabby. Gross colors and everything was just second rate. We just recently went back and WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! What an improvement! I felt like I was at a Starwood Resort! Good job to whomever remodeled the rooms and this is an absolute YES to staying here. Absolute first class now. Beautiful piano music in the restaurant, bar area. The rooms are a beautiful white and grey and the beds are super comfy! Thank you!

Great hotel and location very close to Union Square. New renovated rooms a spacious, very clean and comfortable king size bed. Don't miss happy hour in the bar, the food was very good. The TV in the bathroon mirror is fun. The only issue I had was that the ipod receptacle did not fit my Iphone??

Room Tip: Ask for room at the back to reduce city noise.
