“Great San Francisco Location!!!”
Reviewed August 11, 2007

My fiancee and I started our California vacation with three nights at the San Remo in North Beach. It was such a deal for the location...the third night was $19.06 in remembrance of the great earthquake of a century ago. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. Request a second floor room that's not over the restaurant. We had room 42...great spot.

Our first night we were assigned to Room 13 just above the restaurant's recycling bin. It was noisy throughout the night, and ear plugs didn't help. The overhead fan only worked on the lowest (virtually useless) speed, and there wasn't any cross-vent. option. This meant that our one full day in the city featured sleep deprivation. The staff was willing to change our room for the second night of our stay, and the top floor room (69) was much better. Cross
ventilation, quiet, lovely. Yes, the bathrooms are clean and available.

Also got a bum steer on the airport shuttle arrangements. It's cash only service and the price quoted on the receipt/depost slip and the hotel's instruction sheet was wrong, so we had to scramble for more cash at curbside at the airport while rushing to catch our plane...

This is an excellent choice for people who don't mind sharing a bathroom and having a small room. It was a bit noisy for sure, but the rooms were clean, the bathrooms extremely clean and the staff was quite friendly. There were lots of families staying and it seemed
to attract quite a few Europeans.

We decided to stay here because of the location, and we werent disappointed. It was short walk to the harbour, and a managable walk into the city centre. The rooms were clean and cozy, and the shared bathrooms were always clean (and vacant!). The hotel was in a lovely, residential area (although parking is scarce and expensive). Our only critisism would be the size of the rooms (they are really tiny) and the noise all night as a result of our room being near the bathroom. But given the price of the room, it still was great value and we would recommend to the budget conscious traveller.

This is a good hotel which is different from others. we stayed in the penthouse and had no problems apart from the noise from the air conditioning unit which ran all night but with ear plugs it was ok the view was great and the room very clean ,fun and comfy as was the rest of the hotel we really enjoyed our stay.

The San Remo is the best option when you are really on a budget in the city. The shared bathrooms are much nicer than your usual deal and there are plenty of them. That said, you will have a much better experience if you book one of the outside rooms. (The inside rooms are small and dark.) You should also aim for a higher floor if you can (as the kitchen in the restaurant below can be very loud, very early).

My fiance and I stayed at the San Remo for three nights last week and couldn't have been happier. The front desk staff and the cleaners were very friendly and accommodating. We arrived a few hours before our check in time, but they immediately gave us a room. The rooms were small but very cozy and airy--it felt like staying in a guest room in a friend's house. We paid extra and got a room with a sink, which made it much easier to get ready in the morning. There were two sets of toilets/showers on our floor (each in it's own separate room, so it's actually quite private) and we never had to wait to use either facility. Towels, soap, and cups are provided in the rooms, and the showers have shampoo and conditioner. The bathrooms and showers are clean and fresh, although I recommend bringing shower shoes.

The location is perfect. It's in a quiet, very safe feeling residential neighboorhood that's within walking distance of tons of great cafes in North Beach, and there's a Trader Joe's a block away so getting food is very easy. The parking garage we used was about 2 1/2 blocks away and was only $15/24 hours with in/out privileges. Be sure to get parking validated at the hotel, or the daily rate will increase to $30.

We stayed in the middle of the week and took advantage of the centennial special, so the room with the sink cost $80 each night for 2 nights and we got the third night for $19.06. Add in three days of parking and tax, and our grand total for our three night stay with parking was $245. You really can't beat that in San Francisco. If you don't mind sharing a bathroom, this is the place to go. Loved it!

  • Liked — Location, comfortable atmosphere
  • Disliked — Bathrooms down the hall (only a small inconvenience)
