This hotel is in a great location if you would like to to walk to the piers and Lombard Street.
Parking wasn't available on site but you are able to park at the nearby north point center (1 minute drive from hotel). You can get a discounted rate of $20 for 24 hours if you get the parking ticket validated at the hotel. There was some limited space outside the hotel to park while you unload your luggage and check-in.
The check-in desk is up some steep narrow stairs and there did not appear to be a lift up to this level.
Breakfast is not included however there was coffee available in the lobby. There were some nice breakfast places within walking distance 'Eight am' - 1323 Columbus ave (approx. 10min walk) and Cafe Francisco - 2161 Powell street (approx. 2min walk).
The hotel was able to store our luggage while we went on a trip (after we had checked out).
Good points about the accommodation:
- Our room was compact and clean.
- The communal toilets and shower facilities were clean and available to use when we needed them (to tip = shower in the late afternoon/evening to avoid morning queues and take an old pair of flip/flops to shower in).
- Bath robes and hair dryer available to borrow (free of charge) from reception.
- Reception open from 8am - late.
- Local maps and free stickers available from reception.
- Historic quirky building.
Negative points about the accommodation:
-There wasn't a safe available in our room.
- The room we stayed in was noisy as we could hear noise from the bar downstairs.
- The blinds/curtains were not a 'black-out' blinds so sleep masks would be handy.

We would recommend this hotel if you are staying in this area on a budget and don't mind sharing bathroom facilities.

Thank you for your lovely review. The hotel allows the traveler to start their day in a strategic location to visit many of the main attractions of San Francisco, as well as incredible eateries.

We do offer our guests help with their luggage if they are having a hard time bringing them up to the first flight of stairs, just come up to the reception and let us know; we will send someone downstairs.

It is great to hear that you found us to have a good value for the location, and we look forward to welcoming you again.

We were staying on a boat on Pier 39 but an electrical problem meant we had to vacate a day early. It looked like being a disappointing end to what had been a wonderful stay but someone suggested we try the San Remo, the oldest hotel in San Francisco and although it was very short notice we managed to get the last room.
So pleased we did, what a magical place this is. Ignore the star ratings for this hotel, these are governed by the absence of elevators and the fact that all but one of the 62 rooms share bath and restrooms but that is all part of the experience; you will be staying in a beautifully maintained traditional American hotel.
The staff are very helpful, the whole place is scrupulously clean and the whole place is exquisitely furnished and decorated. The hotel restaurant offers excellent Italian food and is very popular with locals as well as hotel guests.
All in all I would heartily recommend staying here, it offer a wonderful opportunity to turn back the pages of time and experience something modern hotels can't offer.

What a lovely quirky hotel. Staff are excellent. The rooms very clean and reasonably sized. Plenty of toilets/showers/baths located round the hotel. The beds very comfy. I spent 10 nights there and will be staying again on my next visit I promise you that. The location is just perfect. Located only a 5 minute walk away from fisherman’s wharf and the world famous pier 39. A 15 minute walk from pier 33 which is the location of Alcatraz cruises. The Italian restaurant and bar downstairs was beautiful which in my opinion serves the best pasta I have ever had. I can’t recommend this hotel enough. You won’t regret it.

Thank you so much for such an incredible review. We are delighted to hear that you found our hotel to be excellent that you liked our staff and location. It is great to hear that you found the shared bathrooms always available and very clean.

Fodor's Guide featured us in the past as:" 10 Stylish Hotel for under $150 a night; a refreshingly affordable gem in pricey San Francisco." Thank you for mentioning that we have the right proportion between price and comfort.

The restaurant downstairs is The Fior d'Italia is America's oldest Italian restaurant, and they are downstairs.

We will be waiting for your return.

Myself and my wife try to get out and enjoy exercising and photography. A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes so we have been active since. Urban hiking in San Francisco with all its hills, is a fantastic place. We are S F GIANTS fans and like to take in a ballgame a year. We have stayed on the wharf many times at various hotels and in Union Square too. We have always walked to the Giants ballpark and always climb the stairs on Lombard, Filbert and Greenwich, great way to burn sugar.
As we travel the city by foot we have found some different places and walked by the San Remo Hotel and were always thinking it might be a different experience to try.
Bodda Boom, Great time, we walked to the Golden Gate Bridge and across and back to the San Remo, did our morning climb of the Stairs and walked down to Oracle Park and enjoyed a game. The room we had was facing the street and really was quiet and had a nice breeze thru it. Sharing the showers and bathroom was no problem and on Memorial weekend the hotel was sold out but the guest and staff are nice and friendly.
My favorite part of our stay as far as cost was the 20.00 dollar parking, which is a 1/3 of the cost of the other hotels we've stayed at. This alone allows us to stay an extra night. We have found our new "Best Place in San Fran" and will be back many times in the future.

Room tip: room 43 and 42 have the best breeze

Thank you for a marvelous review. We are delighted that you found our hotel to be a great place to stay when you visit San Francisco and that it is also good for your health and budget! As you mentioned, we are in a prime location to be able to walk to many of SF’s attractions, so it is a walker’s /urban hiking’s paradise.

We will pass your compliments to our staff.

It is important that you mentioned what a good value the negotiated $20 per night rate is. Some guests complain about being too expensive, but for the big cities like San Francisco, this price is a bargain.

Please keep in touch with us through some of the Social Media. We will be waiting for your return.

It's hard to rate the San Remo as its pluses and minuses are very clear and have been well-articulated.

It's charming, well located, clean and inexpensive with some nice touches like the drinks/snacks bar.

At the same time the rooms are small, lugging bags up and down the narrow stairs is difficult, and our internal room was very stuffy, made more so because our small window opened to the area in front of the desk/drinks area and so had to be kept closed.

Fans aren't very effective if they are just stirring stuffy air.

Some air conditioning would improve the San Remo a lot.

Thank you for your review. We are a different kind of hotel. The hotel is a historic hotel, this is well known and described in all of our brochures and internet descriptions.

San Francisco is famous for being windy, and most of the old buildings are not equipped with air conditioning, a good part of the year we have to run heaters, for it is rarely too hot, but we are working on a solution to make the rooms more comfortable.

It will be nice to have you come back to the San Remo.
