“For a basic motel, we could find no faults”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2011

We were in town to visit our son for the Thanksgiving holiday. We chose this motel because we were offered a great rate on www.aaa.com and because they allowed us to bring our dog. We arrived expecting motel, not hotel, standards and needed the room for nothing other than a place to sleep. Consequently, none of the previous bad reviews applied to us. We found management to be patient, accommodating and very friendly. Our room, 221, had apparently been updated and was extremely clean. No mildew or dust and carpets had recently been shampooed. The room is small but had vaulted ceilings that gave the feeling of more space. Yes, the towels were small but typical of motel quality. The bed was comfortable enough by motel standards. The neighborhood felt safe as we walked the dog around the block. We found our room to be quiet but this could be due to the holiday and that there was very little activity on the street. They are remodeling the lobby which I assume will take care of the "no where to eat breakfast" problem. We used the table and chairs available in our room. Breakfast was adequate; 2 kinds of cereal, 3 kinds of muffins, coffee and juice. One negative was that the tv was very poor quality. All in all, for a motel, we give this property a good review. We would not hesitate to stay here again. Fyi- dog charge is $23, parking $12 a night.

Room Tip: Upper level toward the back would be the quietest. Notify management ahead if bringing dog since onl...

I must admit that I had read the past reviews but felt that this motel was probably not as bad as the reviews made out. I was wrong. We should have stayed at the Comfort Inn across the street – anything would have been better. Our initial feeling on entering our room was that it looked like a room you would rent by the hour. The furniture was old, the room smelled (probably from cigarette smoke covered up by some kind of air freshener) and the carpet and chairs were filthy. I have never stayed in a hotel room where I would not walk barefoot on the carpet but this was the one. The complementary breakfast was continental – muffins and cereals. For what it was, it was OK. The problem was, it was located in the lobby which is so small that it won’t hold more then 6 people at a time and has no place to sit and eat. The only eating area available was back in our room, so the idea was to bring down your room tray in order to bring back your breakfast. The problem with this concept is that no one told us until it was time to do something with our breakfast. The desk staff was very courteous and helpful. For the price and only one night, it did the job but this motel seriously needs to upgrade the rooms and raise their standards of cleanliness. We will not be repeat customers.

I am sorry that our hotel did not meet your standards. We do have a shampoo machine on property and each room is done at least once every few months. We are doing some pretty big renovations to our property. We have replaced the carpets in almost all of our rooms. We are currently looking in to different vendors to purchase "Simmons Pillow Top" beds with duvets. We are aiming to have them ordered by the end of the year. The biggest improvement we are doing right now is a remodel on the lobby, as well as building a new breakfast room about it! In just two weeks we will have a breakfast room which seats 20 and has plenty of room for everyone.

Again, I am sorry that our hotel didn't meet your standards, however; I am confident that you will be happy if you give us another chance in the future.

Spent one night here and it was OK, but was glad to not be staying any longer. For the price it wasn't bad, but the whole place is very warn and feels dirty. The sheets are literally tissue thin and the beds very uncomfortable. Towels are very old and small and need to be replaced. There are plenty of other options in the neighborhood.

A friend and I travelled from Australia and chose to book and stay at the Travelodge based on reviews from this site. Price was a consideration as other accommodation we were looking at that was slightly closer to the Wharf were significantly higher in price.

We were very happy with our choice. As many have the reviews have said, the accommodation was basic which may not suit everyone, but we were pleased, there may not be a zillion fluffy pillows on the bed, but who needs more than a couple of pillows!!. The rooms were a good size and importantly clean & tidy. Some reviewers have commented on noise. There is a busy road outside with traffic, but looking around at Fisherman's Wharf I think this would be the case for most of the accommodation in this area - hey, it's a City after all.

Staff on the front desk were helpful and always ready to give advice - especially Daniel (thanks Daniel!!). There are breakfast choices available in the foyer area of the Lodge. Cereals, muffins, juices, tea & coffee. Grab and run or take it back to your room.

The accommodation is well within walking distance of Fisherman's wharf or bus transport (30) is nearby that will get you to Fisherman's Wharf or into city/connection with BART. Grab a city map from the Travelodge foyer - very useful with all the bus routes & F-line.

Daniel pointed us in the direction of a nearby Safeway supermarket which was very handy for supplies (also has a pharmacy) - nearby at Fort Mason Beach St. Only perhaps a 7-10 minute walk away. You can also catch a 28 bus here all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge - only $2 or grab a muni pass.

We stayed here for 7 nights and was great. There's a handy laundry downstairs out the back of the car park - coin operated, but change machine available as well. We had an unearthly check out around 4am to catch an early morning flight. Daniel kindly arranged transport to the airport which arrived promptly & was waiting for us.

If I ever got back to this part of the world would seriously consider staying here again - thanks guys!

Great value for money. Walking distance to fisherman's wharf & crooked street. Breakfast was good and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay here again

Stayed 6 nights and had plenty of room to move in our room for a family of 4. Very central location to the Bay or local supermarket too buy provisions. Breakfast was simple but a welcome treat. HOWEVER the walls and ceiling are paper thin so you hear everyone else(no sleep), cars park directly below and slamming doors continually annoy(no sleep), Lombard Street is an interesting spot but VERY VERY noisy- garbage trucks, police cars, traffic, coaches all the time(no sleep). If you walk all day sight seeing and look forward to a good nights sleep you won't get it here but it is clean and close to what you need so its a toss-up. I would try to get something in the same area next time and only return if nothing else was available.

Room Tip: Go as high up as possible to avoid the noise of people walking on your head! 3rd floor would be best...

We appreciate the honesty in your review. I am sorry that the room wasn’t as quiet as you would have liked. We do have an interior building that tends to be a little bit less noisy, as it is not so close to the parking lot. For our future guests, we have a 24 hour desk, which means you can call us at any time if your neighbor is making a lot of noise and we will be happy to rectify the issue immediately. We are more than happy to move a guest to a different room, farther from Lombard Street, should there be an issue with the street noise. Again, we appreciate the review and thank you for staying with us!

I recently stayed at the Travelodge by the Bay in San Francisco. It was one of the cheapest places in downtown San Francisco. The immediate surroundings are okay. There are a handful of cheap breakfast joints within a 2 block radius. There is a bar right on the corner about 6 doors down from the hotel. It's small but quite busy. We were also just a stone's throw from a bus stop.

There are several interesting areas within walking distance. Ghirardelli Square and Fisherman's Wharf are about 15 minutes away and if you are up for it you can walk out the front door of the hotel and take the steep climb up Lombard St. It's definitely not for the faint hearted but the rewards are excellent. 10 minutes up Lombard St is the top of the Crookedest St in the world and a great view of Coit Tower and the bay. You can also catch one of the famous San Francisco trolley cars from there. I believe we paid $12 for an all day pass and it's worth it for the experience if nothing else.
If you are looking for local bars. Polk St which is a few blocks up Lombard ( about a 10 minute walk from the hotel) is a good choice.

The hotel itself was average. Not terrible but nothing spectacular. We had the only suite in the hotel. It was okay but we could never really open our curtains because the hotel is in the syle of an old motor inn with the structure being built around a large parking lot. Right outside our window was the walkway to the other rooms so we would have people walking by all the time. It was quite busy when we were there and I think this was due largely to location and price.

I would stay here again but only if I was with friends. The hotel is not a romantic getaway destination but it does offer a clean place to sleep in a good location at a reasonable price.
